The reason you should'nt use run off water is because the birds will shit all over the roof,then contaminate the collected water,any disease or parasite one bird has will then be passed on to all the rest,clean rain water will do no harm to birds or ferrets but its easily contaminated from all sorts of sources so best to use tap water or from a container that cant be contaminated

Funny you brang this up ;)

 

On my Chicken shed i always had a waterbutt to collect the water of the roof of the shed to use as drinking water for the birds ben doing that for years and all 30 of the birds are fine.

Living on farms half my life, the only way we get drinking water is run-off into rainwater tanks. If its ok for me it'd be ok for my pets. Although if you have lots of pigeons or the like constanly shitting on your roof I'd add some lime or something to the water. Used to add lime to the windmill tanks if an animal had died in there.
