Lusitano 294
Looking for some info on the Drahthaar... I've been told that they are not just your standard HPR breed and are regularly used to catch and dispose of various game. Can anyone confirm this? Has anyone got any experienced in using the drahthaar for hunting larger game? And how do they compare compared to other hunting breeds like terriers and bulldogs? Thanks in advance Quote Link to post
bullmastiff 615
Drachthaar is just the German name for the German wire haired pointer I believe. It's still a HPR breed so can't really be compared to a terrier, they've got completely different hunting styles. When I was a keeper the estate owner had one that used to catch/maul deer for a past time bloody thing! 1 Quote Link to post
Lusitano 294
Thanks for your reply... in relation to the terriers i was asking if they are as head on as the terriers and bulldogs are with game as ive heard that they are more than eager to catch and finish game off. bullmastiff 615
I've only ever seen one work so couldn't answer that sorry. Reading on here, guys have had them catch/kill fox and I believe one is coming with us in January on the Spanish boar hunt. Im fairly sure Same as the weimaraner it was originally bred to hunt all game, big and small but how many could still do that I don't know? Quote Link to post

But they are actually a versatile dog which does not fit into the HPR Niche. From my own experience over here DD's can do almost anything you want them to. My own aging example was an excellent field dog, and blood tracked many black bears and white tailed deer. He also dispatched vermin, treed squirrels, and handled anything else that came his way. From what I understand of a keepers job a DD would be a pretty good fit. But they are hard dogs, and require a firm hand. If you do not have this quality yourself you would be better off with another breed. ATB Quote Link to post
