valerio 32
I prefer to have my terrier on lead and my friends do the same thing.if free my terrier will hunt roe deers, boars and every other quarry and come back tired and useless for digging.another reason is to prevent him entering in some really big rock dens that are dangerous and undiggable and to stay clear of porcupines. Years ago a bloke I dug with was attending a badger dig (when legal) and there was a team of 6 or so diggers and a rake of dogs with them...the guy in question - Goofy - always allowed his dogs off the lead, usually in the hope they'd be first down and taking the credit for the find. Anyway, all dogs except his were coupled (good practice prior to an organised dig) as they approached the sette. All the team were carrying digging implements and Goofy had a pickaxe. As he swung the pick towards the ground to prepare for the start, his Russell bitch, Tess, ran past him, straight into the path of the pick, which drove straight through her back; she bled to death at the site. Guest vanstub
How many of you lads encourage and allow your digging dogs to hunt up, We work a lot of piles and bleak moorland, and much prefer to have dogs able to do both. Some lads way is to take a dog from a box, walk to an earth, get a dig, clear up, and go home, nothing wrong with this I do it too, I just prefer to mooch all day with the dogs off the lead. I find my dogs see more work this way. Any thoughts <{POST_SNAPBACK}> yeah alwats let mine run through the cover as long as i've got a lurcher with me loads of sport that way Quote Link to post

Stabs 3
All mine hunt up and if I'm honest, then that's what I most enjoy watching. I love seeing a dog work in cover or in the woods. I must be lucky though, as I've never dug to a rabbit Having said that, her obedience is spot on Quote Link to post
Guest Dillon
Stabs .. you da man of unting up, and Nell is some bitch. Thats what is pleasing to me too, watching the dog hunt, some don't possess the ability to hunt up, they may dig and stay all day long, but don't have the brains to follow a scent through cover or rocks. I suppose at the end of the day I should have asked what level of obedience do lads expect from their terriers, to be able to allow them to hunt up in the first place. Cheers Dillon Quote Link to post
swanseajack 228
I broke the rules on Saturday just passed Couple of the lads popped over in the afternoon, one of the local farmers had been having trouble on his land and wanted us to go up and sort it out, so we thought we'd pop over and have a look. On arrival we met with the farmer, he passed comments on my 'glorified poodles' and told us where he thought the foxes were... not wanting to hang around as it was the afternoon we let the dogs of to relieve themselves whilst we were chatting.... bad move! They went under the gate and headed straight for the farmers tip, situated behind the barn, about 75 yards from us you know the sort, piles of scrap and rubbish, metal milk crates, old carcasses that's been there for years... all dumped in a rocky outcrop surrounded by fearn. Not taking to much of a hurry because the farmer wouldn't stop yappin, we strolled into the fearn and realised the dogs were knowhere to be seen.. quick check around with the lurcher we found em, under the biggest feckin rock (where else) all hell was breakin loose, as you know two dogs together is deffo not the ideal situation at any time never mind under an imoveable rock... by this time the lurcher was going ape shit, the young russ/pat pup on a lead was also going ape, turning cartwheels screaming his feckin head of... Anyway I get myself under the rock for a better view, I can see Jack's arse tuggin away pullin for all his worth, another couple of inches and I'd let the lurcher in give him a hand, get the job over quicker.... here goes.... baited breath... it's on its way.... nearly enough room... bang... let the lurcher in beside me.... IF I DID. . Picture this..I'm laying on the floor.. squeezing under a rock... the lurcher's squeezing in beside me... not much room.... THE PAT/RUSSELL PUP latches on the the lurcher's arse..... FECKIN HELL :realmad: ....... BEDLAM.... :realmad: lurcher can't turn round coz i'm in the way, i'm trying to stop the lurcher doin me.. and the feckin pup is about to cop it from a now really wound up bull cross.. :search: during this mad commotion... I failed to notice Jack had let go of his quarry... next thing is, it's bolted on the other side of the rock.... into the fearns... lurcher's by me ...lad with the shotty is standing on top... he hadn't even loaded, he's watching it get away.... Farmer, lads, lurcher, pup go straight to the cover where it had bolted to, I'm still under rock.. wondering where the feck's Milly, I'd managed to grab Jack... a quick listen.. I can here her on... stuck into it by the sound of it, mixing like a pro... up to the left of me yep, you guessed under another fecking rock..... 5 mins go by, I'm trying to get the attention of the others to come back..... Guess what happened next.... It bolted , opposite direction to the gun and lurcher... :11: :11: :11: :11: :11: :11: Farmer was O'k about it all, could see the funny side of it really, :search: It's still early in the season, next week will see me out up there 2 terriers on leads, couple of guns all legal like, my afternoon's exercise behind me...... MY ADVICE: KEEP EM ON LEADS BOYS on new land, seems funny now but it could have all ended differently and I'd be writing a RIP ...... Good thing to come out of it: it's the first time my young bedlingtons have seen owt to ground, and they didn't let me down, although doubled up first off, they're still young and there's plenty of winter left in front of us... Stabs 3
This one was a F*cker for rabbiting, but then again, he never did like the dark very much As long as you know the ground and have control of your terriers to a reasonable extent then I've never seen a problem. If you know there are earths there and you don't want any accidents then it's entirely in your control. It's those new earths that appear overnight that are the problem Quote Link to post
