out at the weekend

Recommended Posts

well folks. i was out at the weekend at an old hospial grounds doing a bit of ferreting on sunday morning with one of the lads. we have been hit really hard this year with mixy so its a real challenge trying to get a rabbit latley which makes it all the more fun. we pulled up about 10 o'clock and seen too rabbits which ran straight for the ditch as soon as they were aware of our presence. we jumped the gate and got started and put a few nets down over the first set of burrows we seen, ans the first one we seen those rabbits run into. we netted up all the holse and i got out my young kit lucy who was on her first real hunt. i entered her and quick as you like and with no encouragment in she went and started to hunt like she has been at it for years. she wasnt in two minues and straight away a fine big rabbit burst into one of the nets, and the day looked like it was gonna be a good one!

we ferreted our way down the ditch for about another half hour getting torn apart by briors all the way down. one spot looked promising with well worn burrows so again we got set up and put my little albino in. she was in a few minutes going great when i heard the bushes shakes and out burst two more rabbits about 15 yards down out of burrows i had'nt even spotted. out popped the little albino soon after from a hidden pop hole. she too done her job well!

on we went and tried the last few on the long ditch we were working for a good while now. everything was in place and i got the little albino "gypsy" on the case again. in she went and not a minute after out flushed a big rat and made its way quickly to the other side of the ditch and it was gone before the poor terrier even got to take a glance at it. we waited and i fixed up a few nets and got a brior in the eye in the process, which by the way is very very sore. i was sitin down giving out and complaining about my sore eye whilst my mate waited by the nets. it was quite for some time but i knew she was hunting in there and out bolted another fine rabbit and she took the purse net and peg with her and off she went down along the ditch. the terrier didnt make the same mistake twice and he ran after the rabbit and when the rabbit slipped the terirer was up on her and caught her in a lovely snap and returned with our second of the day.

by this time i was doing too much complaining over my eye and we decided we had enough, packed up and made our way back to the jeep. it was a good morning and great enjoyment, although we only had two rabbits and a watery eye to show for it, its all about having fun.!
