Scope Quandary.

Recommended Posts

With my ancient eyesight not being what is was I tried shooting whilst wearing glasses for a while but it was a nuisance so I experimented without specs, using the parallax adjustment to compensate. My grouping improved considerably, however I found my x9 scope was not quite up to rabbits heads at 100 yards (hmr) so I bought a x12 which was an improvement.

When I got a .22 Hornet with the intentions of extending my ranges to 150 yards I bought a second hand 6-24x44. Set on x18 it’s great for target zeroing and rabbits. This morning when trying to pick up a crossing fox I found the field of view far too restricted. After the fox had scarpered I turned the mag, down to x12 which seemed much better.

I was wondering what sort of power you others use for general hunting.

I’m inclined to replace the scope with the one I had on the hmr, a Hawke Endurance 30; 4-12x50, rather than just turn the power down on this one as it was dawn when I was out and it didn’t seem very clear in low light. It’s a Nikko Sterling Target Master.

Any other suggestions welcome.

I’m going to stick some cut-outs out and try and compare them tomorrow.

I use a 4-16x50 Nikko gameking on my hmr and use on top mag on the range but when out in the field I keep it on 4x mag depending on where I am but when a rabbits spotted and I'm in position ...preferably sat on my ass with bipods down I then zoom in to the target on a comfortable magnification.

My rule is that although you may not use the top mag it can be problematic getting a view on the top mag whatever the scope is be it a 3-9 , 3-12 and so on.

Truth is now you've gone up to 6-24x50 you have to sacrifice close range shooting to a degree with 6x being the minimum magnification you can go down to.
