The Sporting Whippet Club of NI Dog Show/Race Day and Barbecue, Sunday 14th September 14, at Dunsilly Kennells, Co Antrim

With the September dew still on the grass, trailer and dogs in tow, we set off for the County Antrim Countryside and the town land of Dunsilly. With its beautiful schooling track and easy accessibility to the motorway, Dunsilly Kennells was the perfect venue for the last “ Sporting Whippet Club NI “ Dog show, Race day and barbecue of the year 2014 . There was a larger crowd than expected, and very soon the field filled up quickly, with Canine folk all out for another Whippet Show and Race day at Dunsilly.

When we arrived in the field Paul Reynolds and his cookery team were already there preparing our food for the day. With the barbecues lit, burgers and sausages on the grill, and various types of stews, including game and venison gurgling away in the slow cookers, hunger and appetite comes to mind. It was not long to the smell of mixed spices was wafting their fine food flavors all over the place.

At approximately 12.30 the Heats for the Racing took place.

After the heats, the Barbecue got into full swing, and what a spread was laid on. All types of salads, burgers, sausages and different types of stews, breads, were on offer and all washed down with white or red wine. Heather Reynolds, Paul Reynolds wife made a beautiful, very large cake for the occasion, and everybody was offered a slice accordingly. I must say this cake was a work of art, and just delicious. Heather you are a star. Your cake making is a credit to you. After the Barbecue, the showing began and was followed by the racing.

And Finally, thanks to the judges Margaret Martin and Noel Sherry for a job well done in the show ring. Our resident photographer Deidre Mc Coy was on hand to capture our moment of glory. We do appreciate your photographs Deirdre. They give us so much pride and joy.

The club made a presentation this year to two of its committee members who have gone over and above the call of duty to help the club and the successful running of same. These two accolades went to our secretary Mrs Carole Hill and committee member John Shaw. Congratulations to both people and well done , and a well deserved presentation.

Our Chairman Paul Reynolds made a cheque presentation of £300 on the day to the “ Charity Heart and Stroke Foundation” on behalf of the Sporting Whippet Club NI. This Charity was chosen by the owner of Dunsilly Kennels Mr Victor Mc Donald. These people save so many lives, and another very worthy Charity.

And Finally, Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank our Chairman, Paul Reynolds , Racing Managers Patsy Mc Coy/Mickey Quinn/ Brian Crothers and Carole Hill, and all the hard working committee of the Sporting Whippet Club NI, for a great day of Showing, Racing and Barbecue provided on Sunday, and for all their hard work behind the scenes during the year 2014 .

At this point we cannot forget the man who makes all our show days and dreams possible. Yes Victor Mc Donald, owner of Dunsilly, a heartfelt thanks to you for all your help this year, and we hope to see you again in 2015.

As the showing and racing year comes to an end, and the hunting season begins, I will look back on 2014 with the fondest of memories and a tear in my eye. I made many new friends in the Canine world, helped various charities along the way through my show advertising, and above all the companionship, commardrie and friendship in the canine world.

And as I conclude, I would also like to thank all the good men and women of the Canine world who have supported the Club throughout the year. We hope you have all enjoyed it as much as the committee have and we hope to see you all again in 2015. Keep safe and God Bless.

A Tribute to the late John Shaw who passed away  last Thursday 6th November 25

      I Am Free
Do not grieve for me now my  friends and family, I am free
I am following the path God Laid for me
I took his hand when I heard him call
I turned my back and left it all
I could not stay another day
To Love, to live, to hunt, to show my treasured Whippets, or play.
I found a peace at close of day.
Be not burdened with the times of sorrow
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow
Perhaps my time seemed all to brief
Do not lengthen it now with undue grief
Lift up your hearts my friends and share with me
      God wanted me now,
      He set me free.
John, we will love you forever and you will be sadly missed by your loving family and all your Country Sporting Fraternity and in the show ring.
May the Angels above give you the best seat in Heaven and may your gentle soul rest in peace.
      For Country Sports Fraternity
