Dieting is perhaps not the best answer as it would seem that most put the weight back on once the diet has ended. What is needed is a life style change to include diet and exercise and a better understanding of our own health, to enable people to take more responsibility for their bodies. As i said there are often underlying reasons for negative behaviors such as over eating and smoking and the subject needs to be viewed in this wider context.

As for friday night in A+E well smoking related disease accounts for many more hospital admissions than friday and saturday fights by a long way! 15-20% of smokers will get COPD with the result that each one will cost a lot more than they will pay in tax through their life, multiple admissions each year lasting over a week on average at 8 hundred pounds a night, years of continuos drug therapy, home 02, home nursing, etc. This doen't include the heart disease and then cancer so unless you are Richard Branson your not paying enouth tax.

I run 15-20 miles a week, mountain bike and surf a couple of times, then theres across country with the dogs a couple of nights through the winter time. I choose this lifestyle as it's what i enjoy but others would hate it or be unable to cope physically yet i have had a job controlling my weight as i've gotten older so god knows how more sedentary people cope. At present i'm nearly a stone over racing weight.
