wildthing 7
Does any one know of a mild, water soluble antibiotic, thats suitable for ferrets thats readiy available please? ive tried various vets but all insist on seeing the patient before prescribing, and of course charging a consultation fee. Ive previously used "alphachlorolose" which i had for pheasants and partridges which worked a treat but thats now ran out, and modern keepering involves getting prescribed antibiotic already mixed into feed, and obviously ferrets wont eat game crumb, even with blood mixed with it!! any feedback much appreciated, many thanks Quote Link to post
TOMO 28,561
I've always used amoxicillin ,,,the stuff us humans use,,,as well as vets giving it to dogs and cats.... They way I have used it in the past is to ,,first isolate your ferret,,,then it's is water drinker,,,crush a tablet up in to a fine powder,,,then with a drop a hot,,,but not not boiling water,,,disovel it in the drinker,,,then top up with cold water,,, Then instead of feeding hole carcass for a week or two,,,,feed cat food ,,,only give the ferret enough that it eats it in one go,,,so just a small amount,,, I then add 1/4 of crushed tablet,,,to this small meal,,,,if the ferret eats all this,,,you can feed it some more,,,the tiny meal is just to get the antibiotic inside... Using the above method,,,you get a daily. Or twice daily amount in the ferret from it's little meals,,,,and also tiny amounts regular from the drinker,,,, What's the problem is it an absess on the neck,,or some other wound?,,,,any of these this method will work 2 Quote Link to post
wildthing 7
thats great mate thanks. No wounds or anything external, he's been off his food for last 2 or 3 weeks and its showing! thought at first he could smell jills in season so was more worried about shagging than eating but have seen him sick a couple of times in last couple of days so want to give him a bit of a "pick-me-up", cant think its anything but gut trouble as he hant been out and all other ferrets are fine. I'll get him on the amoxycillin straight away. very very gratefull for your help, you could have just saved my liner!! Quote Link to post
