0riel Harriers Hound /Dog Show and Race day, Dundalk, Co Louth Sunday 13 th July 14

With a clear blue sky above us, dogs and car loaded up, it was time to set off to Oriel Harriers Hound /Dog Show and Race day at Faughart, Dundalk Co Louth Sunday 13th July. As we were not sure how to get to the venue, we were guided very by Mrs Sat Nav, who gave directions, and reliably informed us we were coming to the end of the motorway and approaching our destination.

There in front of us, deep in the roaming Dundalk countryside, nestled in the bed of the beautiful Cooley Mountains was the venue for the 1st The Oriel Harriers Hound /Dog Show and Race day at Faughart, Dundalk Co Louth. And what a first class venue that was. The sun continued to beam down on us all day, and very soon after arrival, the field was full to capacity with cars, trailers, dogs, and families.

The show organisation was impeccable. Showing and racing went without a hitch, and on top of it all, God blessed us with beautiful weather. There was a large attendance, both of Lurchers, Terriers, Whippets, Hounds and Pets from both North and South of the border.

On site were Toilet facilities, chip Van, Bouncy Castle for the children, and a PA System second to none. Eugene Larkin, you were brilliant with that microphone in your hand. It was nice to hear our names been mentioned on the roll of honor, and in our moment of glory with our faithful Canine friends at the show. So proud we were.

Many outstanding moments at this show came to mind on Sunday. I think the highlight and a big attraction at this show was the prizes and welcome. Each class winner received a rosette and a bag of Gain Dog food. The Mighty Quinns, Mickey and Michael Quinn, father and son, from Lurgan in Co Armagh, went home with 9 bags of dog food between them. Their dogs are not going to go hungry for a while. Wait to you see the shine on their coats next week.

Congratulations to Mickey and Michael. Mickey won Overall Show Champion with his beautiful Lurcher lady, and Michael won Overall Puppy Champion, with his beautiful Whippet pup Tara. A great father and son combination there. Another lucky guy who went home with 5 bags of meal to Annaghmore, Co Armagh. Yes it was Davy Best, who won the Overall Champion Whippet with his winning whippet Penny. A big congratulations to Davy.

The showing commenced at 1.30, followed by the racing.

A big congratulations to both men and all the rest of the winners on Sunday.

And Finally, many thanks to Eugene Larkin, who was the master of ceremonies on the day. Eugene, you carried out your duties with superb efficiency and kept everybody well informed with all the class winners etc., and has been very helpful to myself with sending me all the results. Your PA system was the best I have heard at any dog show I have attended, and I have been to many over the years.

I would like to thank Gerry Mulligan master of the hunt, Mary Keating, and all the Oriel Harriers show committee and band of helpers for your hard work and preparation on Sunday to make this show so successful and enjoyable for everybody. Your committee made us all so welcome on the day and took care of our every need.

Thanks to the Judges : Lurchers/ John Lip Rooney, Whippets/ Dave Horan/ and Terriers/Danny McIntyre. The task of judging is not an easy one, but you all did a brilliant job as usual. Billy Harpur and Bluebell were there with their cameras recording all our moments of glory. There will be some lovely happy photographs up on the sites shortly.

And last, but not least, we cannot forget to thank the owner of the land Mr Gerald Mc Ardle. Without you Gerald the show would not be possible. A big thank you on behalf of the Canine folk and show goers, North and South of the border, and the Oriel Harriers club and committe for your generosity.

A memorable day and show was had by all, and I am already looking forward to more of same next years. Well done Oriel Harriers, simply the best.

A Tribute to the late John Shaw who passed away  last Thursday 6th November 25

      I Am Free
Do not grieve for me now my  friends and family, I am free
I am following the path God Laid for me
I took his hand when I heard him call
I turned my back and left it all
I could not stay another day
To Love, to live, to hunt, to show my treasured Whippets, or play.
I found a peace at close of day.
Be not burdened with the times of sorrow
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow
Perhaps my time seemed all to brief
Do not lengthen it now with undue grief
Lift up your hearts my friends and share with me
      God wanted me now,
      He set me free.
John, we will love you forever and you will be sadly missed by your loving family and all your Country Sporting Fraternity and in the show ring.
May the Angels above give you the best seat in Heaven and may your gentle soul rest in peace.
      For Country Sports Fraternity
