slipper 116
Hi all just after a bit of advice really I'm still struggling with recall with my 9 month old springer, I know there will be people that will say this should be sorted by now but this is my first gundog and all I have had is a few lessons and watched the david lisset dvd s who makes it lookeasy anyhow this is the problem: Find in the garden comes back on the whistle, fine out off the lead when working the cover, she stops On the whistle and comes back on the whistle, but in a field when I am trying basics sit stay recall etc if she sees a crow or pigeon flying low she will chase it and ignore the whistle will she grow out of this or do I bring her back and scruff her? But if I whistle she will come back sometimes but not straight away so am I right in thinking I cant tell her off as she might get confused because she has come back, its really weird, some days she will some days not but if something gets her eye she is off???? Help!!!!!! Quote Link to post
danw 1,748
Use a long line till the recall is 100% when teaching sit/stay add distraction into the training so you can control the situation and correct or reward as required Quote Link to post
slipper 116
Ok will try that dan, what do u use as a distraction? Anything? Just to try to get her to move? And if she does reinforce the stay command? Quote Link to post

In an ideal world you would find some one with a rabbit pen but that is no easy at all I use dummies other dogs, people, kids, if there are ducks at the local park you could try training near them Quote Link to post
Philluk 181
Try a few tricks rather than use the recall so much try the stop more often, so at your side one blow she sits great, so in the field let her get 15 ft and blow the stop and make sure you get it, same rules if she does go to her take her by the collar and put her where she was when you blew and blow again don't speak to her, go back to where you were and recall. Do this let her get further and further and blow. When you recall and she comes to you make a fuss. The stop whistle is hard to master when hunting or chasing and a rabbit pen is the best place. My cocker does it the springer goes deaf I call it a challenge Quote Link to post
