New And Need Starting Advice

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

I was at the yorkshire game fair yesterday and bought a few 4ft purse nets. Ive seen them sold at other fairs etc and this time my curiosity got the better of me. Ive spent most of the day watching videos of people out ferreting and browsing the ferreting section on here.

I now understand that its out of season because there are young rabbits around and this can cause a ferret to stay underground because of a good food source if it comes across a nest of young.

I need to buy a locater collar. Deben mk3 seems to be the consensus.

Kit to include bulldog spade, priest, nets, rebar probe?

Now I need to now what to look for in buying ferrets. Whats best to begin with? Hob or Jill? Albino or polecat? I seen the term micro thrown around abit.

I plan on breeding in the future but that ill reasearch when the time comes.

Also is there anyone in the selby/York area prepared to take a newbie under their wing and show me the ropes on any of their permissions?

Theres alot of farms round here and a whole load of rabbits so hopefully someone will give me permission when I know what im doing.

your on the right track anyway doing your homework, you don't need a priest, and a bulldog spade is the dogs balls I hear but any spade will get you going. colours don't matter, but as for sex maybe get two of the same sex to avoid kits later on (I know you said you want to breed but better getting an idea first) locators a must

get out knocking on doors for permission (when you get ferrets of course) and happy hunting.

:icon_eek: don't mention micro

Do you drive or looking for somebody local? Start knocking doors now and tell them your intentions, if you can get permission before the season starts your a step ahead if not I'm sure folks will give you days out of you ain't a twit

Thanks for the replys guys. Norseman I think 2 hobs to start with then, would have jills but fimding a vasectomised male to service could be a pain for a newbie.

Hotmeat Im not driving at the moment but soon hope to get my car back on the road, still can travel though the public transport roumd here is pretty good. Dont know how they feel about ferrets on the bus or train though haha.

Don't start it becomes all consuming, looking for perms upgrading kit getting ferrets to work well then your best one ups and escapes and gets himself run over, and now you have to start again and getting itchy feet waiting to go out again..

You'll love it
