Guest Ditch_Shitter
Yeppers. Like the vast majority of people with a clue, I always fed mine a bit of breakfast before setting off. And that's the important thing to bear in mind, Scuzy; Don't let them blow out on the full three courses. Just give them a snackette to set them up for the day. Ferrets are single minded creatures. All they think about is killing things. If they're not hungry, they'll concentrate on trying to kill something and won't be distracted by the secondary impulse to actually do anything with it, if they manage to kill. Another thing I always did; About halfway, once I'd done a bury or three and got the first bunnies, I'd give the workers a bit of liver or a heart. Again, just something to top them up and make them feel like super ferret again. If ye've ever put in a solid days graft on a building site, ye'll know what I'm on about Richie; Feed ye ferrets, mate. Not Trolls. Quote Link to post
springfield 20
Myself with young ferrets I try to give them a rabbits so its ate by saturday, then work sunday. So saturday they don't get anything(EAT RABBIT-SMELL RABBIT).Then sunday work I just do this with young ferrets on their first outting.Seems to work.Keeps them alert.I only let the youngsters go for a morning on their first trip. You get so many different answer its what works for you.some say in the wild they would not eat every day,but in a hutch they can't tell us that. Quote Link to post
gibby 0
I feed my ferrets every night shortly before I go to bed, for no reason other than habit. Theres always some left over in the morning to be removed anyway so I just take the ferrets out straight away in the morning, works for me. I agree with ditch in the fact that I always give them some heart and lungs etc, when Im putting them back in there box for the journey home, just to let em know they've done a good days work Edited October 7, 2007 by gibby Quote Link to post
Hob&Jill 258
I just go on as normall, feed them at night and take them out in the morning. They dont seem to be as keen if I give them a feed in the morning. Quote Link to post
Scuzy 1
Hi guys, Just came back from ferreting, i had a few rabbits but in some of the warrens my ferret went in and came straight back out another hole and wandered off, then i re-entered him and out came a rabbit! . not like him at all, if theres a rabbit down there he usually stays underground for a while then out comes the rabbit. perhaps ill try not feeding him next time and see what happens. mole trapper 1,705
Personally i feed my ferrets ad lib, ie they always have food in there courts, whether it be raw or dried but usually both at the same time, they still hunt keen as feck for the hell of it, but then i am only a messer as i only do it for a living. Guest Ditch_Shitter
I'll feed my ferrets some minced beef and a cut up boiled egg before I go I suspect ye may have over done it there, mate. Like I said; 'A snackette - Not the full blown three courses!' Anyway, I have a sneaking suspicion ye ferret was acting out of knowing what was what, more than considerations of stomach content Quote Link to post
