Have just returned from the vet, after spending yet more money.Thursday i was walking the dogs, and noticed my 8 month old beddyxwhippet pup had the squits,no prob as sometimes they just do,and its gone next day.Friday morning she seemed ok,and i let my lad take her ferreting. She was her normal self, and he gave her the guts of a couple of rabbits. When he got her home she seemed a little under the weather, and still had the runs,so i gave her some goats milk with some honey and apple cider vinegar. She spewed this back up,so i decided to starve her for 24 hours.Today i took her out for a walk as she seemed ok,but when she went to the toilet, it was just like yellow froth and had streaks of blood in it.Vet examined her, said there was no imflamation, and that she didn't have a temperature,or any other symptoms to suggest she was unwell. He gave her some zitac (antacid) and mixed up some black tar like stuff called Antepsin. He said starve her for 30 hours and in the meantime give her the tar stuff,as he said it was like imodium, and would dry her up.His diagnosis is indigestion, which may have damaged the stomach lining, causing the blood,or she is bleeding from her back passage due to straining.Got to take her back Monday.Anyone had anything similar with there dogs?

My dogs have had blood in their shite before but never shown any signs of being unwell. I just fast them for a day & keep an eye on them. They've always come good. Suppose they're like us & do have their off days & feel slightly unwell sometimes. If they do have tummy trouble i give them milk of magnesia.

Happened to me, with my Orange Dog, mate. She's the centre of my universe and I was hysterical. I was lining up to sell my entire Trap Collection to cover the fees of the best Specialist in the country for her.

Turns out, the local white coat took a quick look at her. Said more or less what yours said: 'Not much wrong here. Now give me loads of money!', which I did, and home we went for tea. That was about four years ago and Orange Dog's in the armchair as I type this ;)

Just in passing; Orange Dog is also one of the 'lumpiest' Dogs I've ever known. Hardly a week goes by that I don't have a fleeting awareness of some or other little bump beneath her skin. First time I found one of those to, I thought it was the end of the world. That would be Eight years ago now! She's not getting any younger, that's for sure. In fact she's slowing down to 50% of what she used to be like - but then, so am I :icon_eek: But she's fit enough, healthy and has extremely clean, white teeth :good:

Reading your post ,bill88,am i right in thinking you give the Guts of a rabbit to the dog .Its no wonder that she spewed.Keep the entrails away from the dog mate .

I didn't give the dog anything,my son was ferreting,he gutted the rabbits shortly after getting them, and the dog helped itself while he was putting the rabbits in the game bag.

She seems better now,but she's still a "little loose" in the toilet dept, but i think that may just be the rice and cooked chicken,as her normal diet is raw meat and veg.The night before she was ill,i noticed her stomach was making a lot of noise, like bubbling and churning, and the vet said she had a lot of acid in her stomach ?I'd appreciate some advice on colitis, what the syptoms are and the product you treat it with. Thanks,Bill

Al,she has bones nearly everyday of the week,as she and my other dogs are on a raw diet.Vet seems to think it was from her back passage (the blood)as it was red,and if it was from the stomach it would have been brown/black from being digested. It did cross my mind though mate.

Edited to say.

I keep hens, and the dogs are quite fond of a drop of chicken poo  ,but it's done them no harm before,so maybe thats irrelevant.

the fact that the dog had the runs and there was some red blood, I would be inclined to believe that she may have nicked her lower intestine wall or her anus with a splinter/ piece of bone. the fact that the blood was red and there is no abdominal swelling would serve to indicate that the problem is in the last half-meter of her system. it will mend itself provided the bone is not lodged there and an x-ray would show that.

colitis is also a possibility as mentioned but likely a smaller amount of blood.

the blood in the vomit is most likely a different complaint and not related.

how is she today?

yer thats right. bones can splinter and could peirce places during the digestion cycle ect. especially cooked bones. you should never give a dog a cooked bone. raw bones are usually fine. but a bone would not really be the cause of the yellow froth you wouldnt think. :hmm:
