New Record For Me...

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Still feeling great from what I managed to achieve yesterday and thought i'd share it with you!

The sun was shining, wind was light and it seemed the perfect day to get out in the field and have a little target shooting competition with my mate.

We set up some knockdown and spinner targets at different distances from 25 to 50 yards and took turns at picking these off.

After about an hour we decided to attempt to shoot beyond our comfort zones and just see how we get on. We measured out 80 yards and placed a beer can on an upturned log so it would be elevated above the length of the grass.

I can honestly say that this is the furthest shot i've ever had a go at and I was not feeling to optimistic about the outcome and neither was my mate.

My Hw95k is zeroed to 25 yards so to even get close to the target some serious hold over would be required.

We decided that shooting from the prone position off a rifle rest would give us the best chance.

As its my gun... It's only seemed fair that I went first. We agreed that we would have a 10 pellet limit and hope that out of that, we would land atleast one of them.

Once all set up, It was time for business. My friend was eagerly watching through his spotter scope as I prepared for my first shot.

For me, it was now going to be a case of trial and error when it came to what mildot I put on the target, and with no immediate back stop but a tree about another 20 yards behind the target, I would not get any indication of whether I was firing high or wide.

I got myself into a comfortable position and settled my cross hairs on the can, taking up the first stage of the trigger. I opted to go 2 mildots above the top of the target, I breathed in and then out pausing to hold my breath, gently squeezed the trigger and sent the shot on its way... I heard a light thud as the pellet connected with the log that the target was sitting on. It was a miss but it did indicate that I was in the right area and that a little bit more hold over would be required. So based on that, the shot was not altogether a waste.

I followed the same process but next time went 2 and a half mil dots over the target... and again heard the same thud as I connected with the log. Not a million miles away so I tried to stay positive and remember I still had 8 more goes at it.

I hoped that perhaps 3rd time would be lucky and went 3 mil dots over my target... POP, the can exploded as my pellet landed dead centre about an inch from the bottom of the can. I was over the moon, this was the longest shot i'd ever made. Now knowing my point of aim, I managed to repeat it another 4 times.

My mate then had a few goes at it and managed to hit it twice, he was well chuffed.

Feeling like we had achieved everything we could at this distance, we decided it would be rude not to add another 20 yards and go for the elusive 100, this would be a landmark acomplishment in my short shooting life so far.

My turn to go first again.. based on the hold over I used for the previous target I thought I would go for 4 mil dots over. The shot seemed to hit low again, this now meant that my hold over for the next shot would have to be off the scale to land it on point.

Next shot I took I went to my maximum mil dot hold over and then a bit more, so I was now off the scale and using a point on the black line that I felt might just be about right. I squeezed off the shot and was happy (shocked) to see the can explode as my pellet landed about 2 centimetres from the bottom of it. It was a really great feeling and to prove to myslef it was not a fluke, I managed to do it again on the very next shot. I then thought it was time for me to quit while I was ahead and end on a high.

It was a fantastic feeling to hit my target at 100 yards and something that I never thought would be a possibility for me, but it seems that a lot of practice does make perfect. I know there are probably people on here who have shot beyond that distance and do it regularly but as a personal goal, it felt great. I must now be an honourable member of the 100 yard club right..? ;)

P.s Tescos sell there own brand beer for 25p a tin, give them a shake and they make a great exploding target.

Thanks for reading.

An envious achievement :toast: which I hope to emulate one day given the right circumstances. Well done to you and your mate. next stop a coke bottle lid lol

Thanks mate, it was a definitely a challenge... the beer can was only a little dot in my scope. Don't think i'd get anywhere near a coke bottle lid, that would be a wonder shot!

Give it a go one day, you might be as suprised as I was!! ha ha

Me being the friend managed to capture a very novice video of the shot, the howling at the end of the video is Daryl; not an animal. Enjoy

Great to see you're now on here mate! :D

I think our filming needs a little work... ha ha. If only I hadnt been so trigger happy and just waited an extra 2 seconds for the camera to focus, it would of been slightly better quality!! I suppose its better than nothing.

Also you could of edited my girly scream at the end, thats lost me all my street cred! :tongue2:

just need a permission without so many lumps and bumps in it to try it. I managed a few bulls eyes at 1000yds with a Lee Enfield No4 (7.62mm) in a high right to left wind at Century range some years ago (13 clicks off target) managed to upset the boys with the sniper rifles lol
