JonP666 11
Almost exactly 12 months ago I posted the following . . . . xxxx I have been doing some ratting on a local farm for some time now and popping in every 3 or 4 days for a couple of hours. I am using a Hornet Multishot in .22 and Accupells and a Challenger NV setup, and am getting 40 - 50 rats per outing, only just seeing a reduction in the numbers. However, what I have been seeing is a young dog fox. He usually appears within 15 minutes of me starting, and although he must know where I am - I can see him as bold as brass sometimes only 10 yards away standing, or even sitting - just looking ! He will then disappear, only to pop back 20 minutes or so later for another look. Well last night, I had just popped a rat on a set of steps leading up to a barn - it was still doing the propeller thing with its tail . . . when up trots the fox, picks up the rat, and I kid you not - I am sure he turned to me and gave me a wink - before trotting off !!! I can only surmise that he hears me doing my thing and knows that there are free meals on the offing. As he is doing no one any harm, I will be leaving him be - until lambing that is, when we shall probably have to take another view. By that time, he should be so used to me, I will probably be able to dispatch him with nothing more than a carefully wielded cricket bat. xxxx Well, over the winter, I have seen him about - and he has grown into a fine chap. And he does still join me when ratting. But . . . . my prediction about the lambs turned out to be just too true ! So unfortunately last evening, just as the light had gone, the dog fox and I had our last encounter ;0( The .22 k-Hornet (35gn doing 3050fps) and Challenger NV from about 70 yards. Shame really, as he was only doing what came naturally. But 'sorting' this chap was different to the dozens of other foxes I have dispatched as I had known him and seen him grow for the last 12 months. (Wipes away a tear ;-) Regards JonP 2 Quote Link to post
irishnut 297
Skin him and make a davy crockett hat from the pelt. He will be your hunting mascot, good luck charm and a handsome ear warmer. Quote Link to post
