got home today and the wife gave me parcel that came through the post . when i opened it i found she had bought me a copy of colored , type and song canaries by g b r walker ( a guy i have been lucky enough to order some birds from )

admittedly i have only had a quick look through and read a few chapters but this looks like its going to be a useful book and one i would not hesitate to recommend to anyone getting into canaries .

the section on sex linked genes is going to be really handy ( once i can get my head around it )

and the pictures are really good even the weird looking types like the giboso espanol and swiss frill , definately not my cup of tea :)

 My copy's right here, next to my left hand as I type this! Great book!

Eminently readable. Geoff's a really grounded guy and has a lovely way of writing.

I only got mine recently ~ recommended by the guys on NBTMH, where Mr Walker himself can be found! I'm reading my way through it, start to finish.

Of course, I know jack shit about keeping canaries. So this book's Really opened my eyes. (And my shopping list of accessories has grown exponentially! :icon_eek:)

I can only read paper books in natural daylight. And that's when I'm at my most busy :( Thus, it's slow going, for me. But, not hard going. The book's great to read.I just only get ten minute breaks to actually read it.

I'm just doing Lizard canaries now. God, how I want to attend a proper (preferably Colour) Canary Show! Geoff suggests it. Get to some shows and actually look at the f**king things.

My ringing experience has well and truly taught me that No amount of You Tube, or pictures, on screen or in books, can come any where Near examining the real thing, inches from ye eyes

I'm just gagging to get up close and personal with my first Coloured Canaries! :boogy:

:censored: Managed to double post! (I need a new mouse. This one's a menace!)

Anyway, Pappabear; What CC would you say is your dream?

Oh, alright, I'll rephrase that as it's a bit limiting! :D

Which CC's most catch your eye?

I like Red Clears. I'd breed those, just to give to people and get some canaries into my area.

Agate's are nice. And I like 'Black and White' birds, like the Opal and Topaz types have produced.

good question , i already have a lovely red/black cobalt hen which is referred to in the book as a intensive bronze so i am looking for a cock bird to pair with her , she is currently paired with a recessive white and sitting on 4 eggs .

if i had the space and the money i would like some of the ino , agates and topaz i also love the pics he has of the siskins my favorites are the recessive white brown opals and the dimorphic mosaic red agate opals , cant wait till geoff gets in touch telling me they are ready to collect :)

O M F G; Stop It! There's a bloke, in Limerick, banging out Black / Red cocks right now. Fifteen f**king € a piece!!!!! :icon_eek: FFS!!!

Oh jesus! Sit down, P.Bear ..... He has a non intensive red black cobalt cock!!! This is just criminal. I really should stay off this f**king internet. It's cruel, knowing there's such stuff, simply too far away!

Never mind. (Calm down, Pete) I have some more stuff to shift out. Haven't quite decided how / where yet. Then, I can pretty much position the cages I have.

Next would be sorting out the logistics of, and buying, the tube heaters and full spectrum lights. Get that done? I'll be ready to receive! :boogy:

I aim to ~ try to ~ sort the electrics through the summer. Then, it'll be make more cages and all the attendant bits. Geoff's book has Really opened my eyes to just how many f**king bits too! :icon_eek:

This time, next year? I'd hope to have birds ~ looking foreward to my own first breeding season

When ye speak to Geoff again, please give him my regards :)

i will do , all the planning will be worth it in the end . i paid £20 for my red/black hen but havent found a cock bird nearby yet .

at the moment i just have 2 triple cages in the cloakroom under the stairs and a large vision cage to house the chicks when they are old enough . i do have a 6x4 shed with 6x6 flight attached that did house my finches and canaries until potsy rats paid a visit and turned all the finches including chicks in their nest boxes and a lovely pair of intensive reds into their dinner all in one night :censored: things .

so now deciding whether to rat proof the shed or take it down and build somthing out of bricks or blocks when funds permit me too .

i only have 3 pairs at the moment and they are enjoying being in the warm so no rush to get them outside , going to do lots more reading and looking at other peoples set-ups so i can get it right from the start

THIS is what I come here for, mate! Just Talking about birds gives me an outlet. So much more so when the person I'm talking too doesn't f**king glaze over! :D

Cages in the cupboard under the stairs?!? No birds living in them? Or am I missing something in this picture? Maybe our individual interpretations of under stair what evers differ? Do ye mean an open space?

I'm a bit of a nutter for light, myself. All the experienced lads seen crazy for it. Light almost sounds #1, for them. Not even certain yet what a close #2 is. Larger birds?!

Does make me tend to look back to aviaries and bird rooms I've known, in the past. They all had solid roofs and, at most, standard shed windows to one side. Stuff bred like shit.

My place though, I feel, is just angled wrong and shaded badly. It won't even start to brighten up till noon and gone. No. I'll get lights.

Your shed and flight sounds the industry standard for a couple of pairs of natives. I wouldn't know how many canaries, at what stage, though.

Ye might have seen that I have an 8 x 4 aviary available and I want to extend it to 12'. It's just occurred to me that I'll then also need a 2x2 security port. F**k me! Pat's gonna live off me!

Rats? I'll be covered. My aviary's all steel. I'll still lay tunnelled snappers along it though. Inside room's at greatest risk, believe it or not! F**kers come through the ceiling! Inaccessible (to me!) old thatch, under tin, up there, see?

If and when ye get to visit others? Remember: Bring us that porn! No need for names and locations. Just show us those set ups! Forum threads showing cages and flights are my favourites! :D

the birds are in there , its just a large cupboard under the stairs , full height at one end tapering to 6ft the other it does have electrics in there so they are not in the dark . when the rat visited i placed them in normal budgie cages as that was all i had and placed them in thereto keep them safe , a few weeks later a guy was selling the triple cages on preloved so i bought them as with the slides out they are 52" wide so plenty of room i think where the light was on in the cupboard this got them into breeding mood and i have decided to leave them in there for this year so i can get things sorted properly .
