Can a terrier do both?

Can a terrier be used for bushing and ground work or is it too dangerous and impractical e.g terriers getting to ground in dangerous spots or a terrier going to ground and ruining the plans for a days bushing . I guess it depends heavily on what you want your dog to do down below and what sort of ground you hunt? If your dog is used for bolting from earths to guns or lurchers is it ok? Making the generalisation that bolting dogs are softer( ) and may only stay to ground for 10-15 mins at a time and dont recieve as much punishment as digging dogs. When a digging dog is to ground its to ground untill its dug out? No matter how long it takes? I am a complete newbie to terriers but I am keen to learn hence all the questions.

imo no a digging dog is a only for digging so therefore should be used for bushing as its too dangerous but im sure you'll a few comments to the contrary with the like on here.

you're asking for trouble leaving a genuine digging dog loose, with no control over where it enters.

i use mine for everything bushing,ratting,digging and in fact anything i need the terrier for,but with that said if im hunting above ground in an area i know has earths i will collar the dog up, most of the time i collar him just in case and when bushing i keep my eye firmly on the dog leaving the shooting to someone else. Yes i have had some lets say "intresting" moments but i only work on friends ground so im not going to ruin a days serious shooting.I would never take him bushing where he and i can get into trouble because the one the dogs good at is gettting into trouble.

By the way while im here i thought you might find this amusing,the guys i was with did!!!

they cut the maze the other day so we were out shooting charlie,well one came out my mate shot it and it bolted,so out came the terrier i put him on the blood and kept the lead on him,he tracked the sent to an earth and then promptly bolted himself down the hole!!! With lead still on i tripped(im very small and slight for a 29yr old man) my arm and head went straight down the earth to amusment of all to see.I dragged my self up and pulled the dog out completly covered in mud stinging nettles and thorns!!! And dog almost seemed to laugh at me aswell the little b*st*rd!!!

Yeah the good old bush bulldozer can do some damage to a terrier underground. They're just so strong, and they know how to suffocate/crush a dog that attacks them...

I had two terriers before i started lamping with lurchers one white lakeland and a jr bitch. Both fiery but did both jobs well. Its how much time you put in to the dogs both dogs were obedient and could be called back from below ground. People who just lock terriers in there runs and dont socialise with them have the problem of there dog going to ground and staying there all day till you dig 2 foot or 8 foot .people might disagree but thats their opinion

Was it a digging dog or a bolter? Any dog I have ever had has been a companion as well as a hunting dog and would hate the thought of having a dog always locked up or on a lead when its not working. My experience however is limited to gundogs so a little different from terriers

People have said they have the dog collared up when out bushing just incase I was always taught that it was dangerous for a dog to wear a collar when working cover

a bushing terrier roams free to put stuff up ,rat rabbitt squirell whatever,most terrier men i know aproach a earth ,with the earthdog on a lead or couples ,to firstly get a picture of the earth they are going to work ,if you let the earth dog run loose over earths or setts you loose the option of leting him enter only what you want ,i have know terriers that can do both jobs n do them well ,but there can be some scary moments along the way !!
