I don't normally look on ad board in pet shop, but there was ad for pair of border canaries and cage,so I rang up and old fella ,had them for 2 years and he lives in a old people's complex and someone had complained about the cocks noise in the summer.

But when I viewed them the hens got overgrown nails and scaly leg, what's best to treat the scaly leg.

scaly feet could be 2 things that are causing it

1 lack of calcium

2 mite

treatment

Wash your canary’s feet gently in warm water.

*Mix together 2 Tbs Vaseline and 1 Tbs Campho Phenique and keep in an air tight container. An alternative salve is baby oil, or you can use Vaseline exclusively, but the Campho Phenique will add some healing power to the process.

*Very gently apply this mixture on your bird’s feet and legs every day for 5 or 6 days

if its a mite prob you can also use spot on or mite spray

with chickens you can use surgical spirit to kill the mites initially, then vaseline over the scales that will suffocate any eggs that have been laid. Not sure about that on a canary though, same pricipal but a gentler method is prob best.

If they where mine i would use Benzyl Benzoate like i do on the chook's.. and i would also treat them in a seperate hospital cage and keep cleaning the perches and cage..to kill any mites that may have dropped of to stop reinfestation..
