Anna Baker 5
Hi, I am trying to learn the difference in Lucher breeds. My partner is desperate for a rough coated lurcher but is that a whippet X with a deer hound? Really sorry for being thick but I am finding it all very confusing. Cheers Quote Link to post
R.A.W 1,987
The term lurcher is a description of any sight hound crossed with an other breed. In your chase the rough coat could come from a Deerhound or Wolfhound on the sight hound side or any other rough coat breed for example ( bearded collie, belington terrier, wheaten terrier and a few others ). Your probably looking for a bearded collie or bedlington terrier crossed with a greyhound or whippet I hope that helps Quote Link to post
skycat 6,172
You need to decide what you want the dog for first. Secondly, how big a dog you want. If you just want the dog as a pet it is important to realise that most sighthounds: Salukis, Greyhounds, Whippets, and Deerhounds, are lovely as couch potatoes at home, but they have a strong prey drive and want to chase things that move fast: not a problem if you want to work the dog, but if it is only for a pet, then get something with a lower prey drive, or learn to train the dog very well indeed or you could find yourself in the brown stuff when the pup becomes an adult and wants to chase sheep, chickens, or any of the wildlife it is bound to come across in the countryside. Size is of course down to you, but be aware that a Whippet can run much faster than any human, so you still need to train it. Deerhounds are the most laid back, whilst Salukis and their crosses are the hardest to train for obedience. 3 Quote Link to post
DazAllison1 556
For a 1st lurcher I'd go for a beardie collie x grey they are easy to train for a 1st timer and will have the rough coat your after Quote Link to post
Peakhound 0
Our first lurcher was collie/deerhound greyhound x deerhound/greyhound and an absolute delight to train.... Agree with skycat re saluki crosses - they're very rewarding, great dogs, but need a certain mindset to get along with them! I've found that you have to be very laid back in training them and let them think its THEIR idea - look at them the wrong way and they either sulk or get totally unravelled!!! Good luck finding the right dog, sure you will enjoy it! Quote Link to post
