CorkyJohn 808
We shoot vermin on a farm which is a mix of grazing & arable. Its approx 300 acres and has a gulley that runs most of the length of the farm that regularly holds pheasants. We are considering asking the farmer if we can put some feeders down so we can have a few days rough shooting, I dont know of any neighbouring shoots but theres always pheasants there, occasionally partridge & we've seen geese here on a few occasions. The rest of the hedgerows offer good cover with wide strips either side. I don't want to offend the farmer as he's a decent bloke, I know he's struggling a bit so wondered how much we should offer him? We have no intention of releasing birds & just wanted peoples opinions on starting a mini rough shoot. Thanks Quote Link to post
Born Hunter 17,907
How many days shooting do you want out of it? Realistically not many on a small patch with no pens, I would think a couple before Xmas and a couple more around Xmas into Jan? I'd be looking at a rent cost of 20 quid per person per shoot. So quid each. Much more than that and you have to ask is it worth it? I mean what sort of bags are you going to expect and how much is wheat/scratchers/bales/feeders going to cost you annually? That's how I'd be looking at it... sounds a nice little bit for a casual rough shoot if you can come to an arrangement. Maybe look to put a small pen down in the future... Quote Link to post
CorkyJohn 808
Sounds reasonable mate, we wouldn't expect many days. Theres a couple of patches near the stream looks ideal for a pond if he'd agree to us digging it out. Just things to think about for the future & we're hoping we might get permission on the neighbouring farm if we hammer the crows. Thanks for the advice Quote Link to post

air gun ant 1,666
You say the farmers a decent guy? Try and get him out for a few pints (usually helps the conversation and the friendship) and see what he wants, he may just say crack on lads and not want anything, in which case make sure he gets a bottle or two for crimbo. Or just make an offer that your willing to pay between you, I'm sure you won't offend him. I go out quite regular with my farmers for a drink and they ring me at busy times of year and need help on the farm with anything. This works for me Quote Link to post
