Sorry I'll re-phrase stupid Australian post.

My sincere apologies to the Aussies for tarring them with the Yank status, not that I really give a f**k, its good to get things wrong now and again, then again the aussies don't because they are all perfect aren't they. :whistling:

Stabs your an import so pipe down :feck:.

I carry a shovel a bar and a rucksack with medical basics (in case we are too far from the motor) nets collars and a box.

My digging partner will also have a shovel and maybe another bar, helps to tie the dogs out.

Chief and Wilf really need to stop having these late night phone chats. only gossips and lovers talk on the phone for so long :whistling:

I'm out alone most times, seldom need to get more than a few hundred yards from the truck, and am on the edge of a change from light soil to heavy shale, so I usually carry a pretty heavy set of tools.

Three ft D-handle round-nose shovel, best quality I can afford.

Six foot 3/4" hex iron bar, rounded point on one end, chisel point on the other. Probes as well as moves rocks.

Trapper's trowel

Folding saw and pruners for roots

3 ft snare pole

Tie out stake and lead

Box & collar

Several nets.

Small medical kit.

Water for me and the dog.

Camera and cell phone.

In the truck, I keep an extra shovel, a heavy bar, a pick/mattock, a set of post hole diggers, and a more complete medical kit.

When I'm hunting away from buildings and can shoot legally, I add a .22 LR revolver to the pack.

BTW... that's an American flag. We Yanks can make our own stupid posts, thank you.

And some russels WILL stay until dug to!

In case the landowner wants me to run fence for him as part of the permission?

Seriously... Sometimes for working through roots and rocks the PHDs let you punch a smaller hole without cutting or prying. They also do a good job if you have to clear dirt from behind the dog. If you overlap the bite, you can dig a surprisingly large hole fairly easy as well. I don't use 'em as my primary digging tool, but a friend does and we dug this one at five feet with 'em. They get down with a lot less dirt to backfill when you're done.

I agree with you JD. That's why I use 'em only for special circumstances. You can get to the dog in the same amount of time with a shovel and have more room to work IMO, but he was the one moving most of the dirt that day so I let him have at it. :whistling:

It was interesting to see them used that way though. You need the right type of soil to use PHDs like that as well. If the soil's too dry or sandy it just runs out the bottom and you need to scoop it out anyway.

The one time that day that we agreed on using them was when the dog got in a tight tube under a massive buried slab of limestone. We were able to locate a crack in the slab over the tube and dig down through the crack with the PHDs. Otherwise we'd have had to dig down along the side then tunnel under it. Would've done it that way if there was no other choice, but I grew up in a mining town and don't like large rocks over top of my head without proper shoring.
