Ferret Hob

My poor old Hob is now 8 years old and looks the worse for wear now. I noticed when I cleaned the Hutch out the other day he was dragging his back legs, I picked him up and placed him on the Grass and after a short while he seemed to get both legs working again but not perfect! the next day he was the same again and after some excercise he picked up again, The Gill he is in with is around the same age and seems ok without any problems. has anyone ever come across this before or can offer some advice what it might be? I also noticed he looked quite wet Underneath as if he's not peeing properly.

 

He's been a good old working Ferret that I would be sad to lose! the kids love him too. Is 8 years old considerd old for a ferret or could he snap out of this one with some care?

Wet under cause he's dragging himself through muck and piss. Seen it in oldies and with back injuries. If they're old and getting 'pearshaped' they need extra support when being picked up. Eight's a good age, possibly just old age..

Maybe as he is an oldie he gets a bit stiffened up when he first wakes up , like old people do

Eight's a fine time for a hob. When the back legs go? Well, it's an almost universal sign that a ferret's had it. He may last another few days, but brace yeself. Explain to the nippers that he's a Very old ferret now. That he's had the best of lives. Now his body's tired and needs a kip. But explain also how ferrets believe in reincarnation ~ so he'll be back, fresh, rested and restored amongst a litter next spring They can see him again then

I think you're right there Ditch. I looked at him this morning and he looks a bit wasted around the back quarters compared to the rest of him, he still eats like a good un but its looking like age has taken its course. I could kick myself as I bred from this pair for a number of years and never kept a youngster back! I used to give them away to lads who wanted to work them in the area, both have been excellent workers for me in the past, I was on the phone trying to get hold of a youngster yesterday hopefully from the same line but no joy, I need one with this new Hawk coming on and keeping my fingers crossed one will come up in the area....
