Neal 1,930
I did have one once, sired by a 3/4 border 1/4 beardie and out of a racing whippet (3/4 whippet 1/4 greyhound). She had no instinct to catch, which I now know from experience was probably down to the particular lines used, if you know what I mean. She was also the most nervous dog I've ever known and would jump out of her skin if I so much as had the audacity to raise my eyebrow in the wrong way. I hasten to add that I'm one of those "shy retiring types" so I'm fairly sure it wasn't due to me being too brusque. However, despite what I've written above about her not catching, she was a keen hunting and bushing dog : I remember one one occasion while out with two other people and being told by one of them that collie x whippets were crap and that I needed to get myself a deerhound cross like one of his. At the time their five dogs were searching frantically through and around a bramble patch while mine was working on her own through a large patch of rough reed-like grass. At this point I was beginning to loose faith in her, but, as the other guy was mid sentence in slagging my whippet cross off, she put up the rabbit that all the others had just walked past and not noticed. :clapping: Needles to say she didn't catch it. Despit my experiences with this one particular bitch I have to say though that I've heard nothing but praise for whippet crosses from others who've owned ones from decent lines. Quote Link to post
