Richard Hunters Show, Saturday 17th August 13

SWATRAGH, a village in the county of Londonderry, sits on the river Clady, and makes up part of the scenic Northern coastline, with its sea breezes blowing across from beautiful Portrush and Portstewart.

This was the venue for Richard Hunters Dog Show and Race day Saturday 17th August 13. Although there were a few showers, it did not dampen the spirits of the show goers, who came out in force to support this great charity Dog Show and Race day.

There was a nice friendly crowd at the show, some old faces and some new. Some great craic and banter, and just an all round lovely relaxing family day out for all the Canine men and women who travelled from all parts of the country. The show started at approximately 12.30, with the Racing first. Here are some results from the day.

At this point I would like to thank Alan Hunter and the NILRC members who helped out with organising and monitoring the racing: Nigel Greer, Chris Angus, Arlene Greer, Leanne Hawthorne and all their brilliant band of helpers on the day. The Racing went like clockwork, without a hitch, and was a credit to all involved.

The judges on the day were Lurchers.Declan Cairns/ Whippets , John Mc Stay/ Terriers, Rodney Gibson/ Childrens Handling Class, Margaret Mc Stay. Not an easy job, but a duty carried out with fairness and respect, and well performed by all judges on the day. Bluebell, Deidre Mc Coy was there clicking away with her camera, recording all our moments of glory. There were also a few other budding photographers, all clicking away on our every move. Many thanks to you all.

I cannot forget our master of ceremonies Nigel Greer, who kept everyone right with his dulcet tones on the PA system all day. Nigel made sure we missed no races or classes and generally kept everyone right. A job well done Nigel. We could not have done without your helping hands.

And finally, may I take this opportunity to thank the Hunter family for all their kindness and hospitality shown to all at the show. Especially a word of thanks to Richard Hunters mum Helen, who has a heart of gold. Helen worked tirelessly, to make sure everybody that came into the field got tea or coffee. Something to eat from her very tasty display of sandwiches and pastries, and all prepared and donated by herself, and all free. What more could we ask for.

Helen, I really cannot find the words to thank you enough for the beautiful spread you laid on for everyone. Many thanks for your generosity.

And Finally, finally, all of this would not be possible without the man of the moment and show organiser Richard Hunter. Richard many thanks for a fun filled day out in the Swatragh countryside. Because of your kind thoughts in running this show for charity , some persons or needy causes will benefit from you dog show and our days enjoyment. Many thanks for that Richard, you are a true gentleman.

Already looking forward to next years show.

A VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL MY FRIENDS IN THE COUNTRY SPORTS  ARENA
As we approach the end to 2025, I would like to reach out and personally thank  all my friends in Country Sports for all  the hard work you  put into  organising our dog show and race days in 2025 for all to enjoy. These were all fantastic events and truly served as a wonderful window for our Country Sports fraternity.
Days like these at our dog shows in the summer are so important for our community, and your details and dedication to the cause has really shone through. So many charities have benefited over the years and so many new friends made at these get togethers  by like minded people. This was very evident in July this year when the Burren Working Dog Club gave £17,OOO to a charity. What an achievement.

I know there will be some very sad homes  this year,  with places missing at the  dinner table  in  our Country Sports  community. Can I please offer my heartfelt sympathy to all those people , and  hopefully with Gods help you will get through to brighter days ahead.

Many thanks to the McGrath Racing Club Carlow, for a great day out at the 5 Nations and who has travelled north and south of the border to run our racing so efficiently and helped me out on many occasions..  A special word of thanks to Tally Ho ( Peter Morgan ) for keeping the Country Sports window open in the dark days of winter by organising your virtual competitions and giving away so many generous prizes in return. This is so greatly appreciated .

And Finally, to my mentors and long term friends  Mr 5 Nations himself, yes The King of the Castle Albertj Titterington and his lovely wife Irene. Albert it is great to see you getting back to health again, and we look forward to seeing you back on the scene in 2026.

Finally, Finally, may I take this opportunity  to  wish you all North and South of the border and further afield a very Happy Christmas and  Prosperous  New Year.

To we meet again in 2026 God Bless

A Tribute to the late John Shaw who passed away  last Thursday 6th November 25

      I Am Free
Do not grieve for me now my  friends and family, I am free
I am following the path God Laid for me
I took his hand when I heard him call
I turned my back and left it all
I could not stay another day
To Love, to live, to hunt, to show my treasured Whippets, or play.
I found a peace at close of day.
Be not burdened with the times of sorrow
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow
Perhaps my time seemed all to brief
Do not lengthen it now with undue grief
Lift up your hearts my friends and share with me
      God wanted me now,
      He set me free.
John, we will love you forever and you will be sadly missed by your loving family and all your Country Sporting Fraternity and in the show ring.
May the Angels above give you the best seat in Heaven and may your gentle soul rest in peace.
      For Country Sports Fraternity
      Margaret Mc Stay
