lurchergrrl 1,441
Well I can understand that if you got a dog for foxes and it didn't fancy them, you may well be disappointed. But you take on a dog and work with it the best you can, and accept it for what it is. If things don't work out I think you've an obligation to do your best by the dog and either keep it as a pet or work very hard to find the best possible home for it. To just say trade it in, as if it's a thing, is total knob-speak That attitude is why so many of them are dumped, tied up and left etc. So it doesn't want to kill a fox, fine - maybe it'll be great on bunnies, or maybe it'll be great with kids as a pet or whatever. Just have to let the dog set the pace, and try to train it as best you can. Quote Link to post

I know where you are coming from but if one of my dogs came off a fox or one of my terriers walked off the job it wouldnt leave the field If the dog doesnt do the job its bred for it should be put down Its not a nice thing to do but it has to be done, there are to many people with dogs not doing the job around but are great pets and caught a few rabbits which are then bred from and the add reads ' Will make great allrounders, Work,Show or pet' Its the reason why it is so hard to get a decent fox dog these days Quote Link to post
J Darcy 5,871
If your pup isnt bred out of fox killing lurchers then i would say you should give it as long as possible.......BUT, if you wanted it for foxes then why didnt you ensure you got a pup bred from two fox killing dogs....a little fore-thought saves alot of agro in the long run?... Buy a pup from parents that are not up to standard and you can't really blame the pup..... Quote Link to post

As I have said umpteen times on this post the bitch is not mine Shes my mates and We have walked her up to my dog killing foxes and run her with him but she has shown no interest If it was me I wouldnt of took the gamble of buying her in the first place and somebody has since told me the father was a coward He must be pounds and wouldnt kill a fox although dogs from his litter are meant to be decent enough Quote Link to post
Guest JDF
my own personal view is any pup i take on gets a good grounding in ferreting lamping and general mouching, thats what i use to decide wether he stays or goes. now that may sound strange when a lot of my time in the field is spent with terriers after fox,the final aim is always to end up with a terriermans lurcher but if that fails then i'm left with a dog thats far from useless. there are after all as many ways to kill a fox as there are to kill a lurcher. Yes mate but what if its a big bull x dog, not good rabbit dog, cant catch a hare? If it doesnt kill a fox your fecked My mate will keep the dog if it doesnt kill foxes, hes not mad into quarry that fights back but he would like the dog to show some interest in foxes Quote Link to post
Guest JDF
all he can do is give it time.the fella i hunt withs son had a dog at 18 months that wasn't really interested(,he was getting the usual shite from his mates oh the dog should be started by now it's crap)the lad was disheartened but the following week the dog took a hold and has never looked back,as his dad said then you see son it's 18 months and one week you start them at all i'm saying is there's no set rule as to when they show willing, tell him not be to down as dogs can pick up the negativity and that'll cause more grief.
