DazAllison1 556
Thought I'd try put some more work into the pups non exsistant retrieving, she has no problem chashing the skin and picking it up but she just wants to play around with it and when I recall her she just drops it and comes in withought the dummy, I've put a good few hours into retrieving but don't seem to be getting to far 1 Quote Link to post
skycat 6,174
You need to start by playing tug games with her. NOTE: NOT tug of war, but a carefully structured game by which the dog learns that it feels good to have something in its mouth when it is in contact with you. Sent you a pm. 1 Quote Link to post
Casso 1,264
A static recall can be a problem for some dogs if the dog percieves the owner as offering too much resistance, in that I mean the owner standing upright and staring can trigger memories of conflict within the mutt , a dog functions through physical memories , which is the reason a dog will come much quicker if we crouch down because its a position the dog doesn't equate ever having been in conflict with us , it changes it's perception of us , Also the dog knows there is nothing in coming back with the item , there is not potential excitement or energy , nothing in it for the dog , it can't understand your intentions, the dog is an immediate moment animal , the item is where the energy is not you and that's your biggest issue, You need to make coming back with item as the start of excitement for the mutt , Use two items , but before you throw one get the dog worked up so there is energy in its system ready for use , show the item pull it away , tease him with it , Throw one and leg it the other way shaking the other item as you go , if he worked up enough the dog will chase after grabbing the item , let him chase you down forget about getting the first , when the dog gets to you throw the second , hopefully the dog may drop first , if not don't worry , The point been that as soon as he picks up one he will in time be programmed to chase you down because there is energy in your actions Don't worry about getting the retrieve perfect to hand the first thing you need the dog to believe is when he picks up one , you are where the action is then , you have the second (potential energy) there is then no energy in the first for the mutt, In time the dog will bring in first for you to throw second, I make them come right up and personal putting his paws on my chest , it breaks down the problem a lot of dogs have with the last few feet, Bird in the hand is not worth two in the bush for a canine , dog is forever the optimist , which is way many seasoned dog won't even look at a dead rabbit (no energy in it) but will stand frozen outside a warren for hours on end in anticapition for an exploding bunny( potential energy) It's the energy in the item not the item itself Best of luck 1 Quote Link to post
