Cleaning 223

Recommended Posts

Newbie to CF rifles. Help please.

Re - zeroed my T3 .223 this morning having repositioned the scope, and then I cleaned the rifle afterwards. How much force should I need to push the cleaning rod through the barrel? I am using a bore guide, and the initial dry patches I ran through to see what ***p there was went ok, but the patches with solvent were really , really hard to push through. The last patch with drop of gun oil on went through relative easily.

Patches and jag are , apparently the right size.

So as the bishop said to the actress " how hard should I be pushing?"

Thanks

They can get stiff, but shouldnt be too stiff as to how much pressure to use,I think each has his own threshold,it should be a firm push it maybee that the solvent is swelling the patches too much ,so you will need less patches on the rod/jag,

I use a lead and copper disolver on a nylon brush push up and down untill it foams then leave for ten minutes and then push patches through untill clean then a oiled patch and then a dry patch works for me the disolver is called g96 copper solvent but it removes all metal and powder fouling

Bore snake now there`s a thing, i was given a couple of those but have yet to use one are they any good?.

Any good? Yes brilliant for holding up your trousers - there must be other good uses for one as long as it comes no where near a rifle bore.

The poster who said it damaged his crown is probably right. For them that use them regularly you will find you hold the rifle pretty much in the same angle each time you use the snake, so unless you pull it through 100% true with the bore, these nylon cords will start to erode the sharp edge of the crown. Hear you saying 'steel versus nylon - no contest' Well read up about it, mountaineers all have to make sure that their nylon ropes only come into contact with pulleys.

The gun repair business I am involved in has seen two snakes stuck in the bore - one knackered the barrel trying to remove it the other came out with no damage to the bore - lucky the owner was not there at the time to see the extremes our people went through with his barrel to remove it.

Finally consider why you will never find a snake in a bench rest shooter's cleaning kit

Had one jam in my .17hmr "never use one again"
