LIVER FLUKE is an ENDOPARASITE (a parasite that lives within the body).

the life cycle starts with the adult laying eggs which are shed through the dung of the said animal throughout the winter.

once the temperature rises above about 10*c they begin to hatch, the newly hatched miracidia then have only 24 hours to find a microscopic mud snail,

this is the intermediate host, once inside the mud snail there is a multiplication phase and thousands of the then 9cercariae )after a few weeks are released and attach onto blades of grass in the form of a small cyst.

the animal then eats the grass and another phase of the lifecycle takes place,to produce immature fluke.

this is the fluke which migrate to the liver, they burrow through the liver to the bile duct where they complete the final stage of development,

the eggs then pass down through the gall bladder into the intestine and then out in the dung to start the cycle again. :icon_eek::icon_eek:

they are easy to see in the liver of a dead animal if you cut the liver into sections. or sometimes you see them on the outside of the liver,

they are dark brown in colour, and slightly oval-shaped.:cry:

good luck on the hunt for them...................... :gunsmilie:
