River season opens this weekend, close 15th March. I don't fish canals so not sure on that.

I use a 10ft match rod for float fishing, with a 6lb line, for the occasianal small carp water but mainly to catch my live bait, so small fry like roach, bream etc (what I'm guessing you'll be fishing for) then I use 12ft rods for mr pike.

The closed season for running water ends on the 16th June, Canals are classed as still waters and as such are not subject to a closed season, a good pole would probably be a better choice when fishing canals

As Paulus said a pole is better for canals....however if like me you don't like them I would go for a 12ft match rod for float fishing, dont know how wide the stretch of canal you plan to fish is but 12ft will give you better line pick up than a shorter rod, meaning more fish on the bank  alternatively you could buy an Avon type rod ,this will allow you to float/feeder fish with the one rod ,mine can be used at various lengths for float or feeder

I fish canals often and I use a 12ft waggler rod with 3 or 4lb main line and a 2lb hook length perfect for all the fish your likely to catch.

If you want to target the bigger fish then use a heavier line and hook length

Tight lines

I just sit on my box but it gets uncomfortable after a while so I often take a little deck chair to sit on.

You don't need to take every thing you own just keep it simple make sure have a plummet! You should always test how deep the area your fishing is and fish at the bottom and your more likely to catch.

thanks for all the replys and information also when fishing canals do you use a box or chair and do you take a basic small kit or a more comprehensive kit

thanks

You don't need tonnes of tackle to enjoy a few hours on the canal, something to sit on ,rod, reel.rod rest, landing net, bait, hooks sizes 14-20,floats,feeders,shot and DISGORGERS,anything else you find yourself needing you can add as you go along, you may decide you want to have a go at the pike/carp in there, again a cheap set up is all you need for a canal, you don't need tackle designed to cast 150yds(yet.....be warned it is addictive):censored: forgot flask and butties :icon_eek:

hi again guys ive ordered nearly all my kit just have one more question which knot or knots do you use when tying hooks or line

thanks

bigj james

there are more knots used in fishing than you could shake a stick at,keep to the easy ones to be getting on with, you can get a step by step guide from your local tackle shop or even on the back of some hook types you buy or go down the ready tied hook to nylon types to be getting on with.

as you progress and start using different tactics you may then decide to use different knots depending on your presentation then you can start thinking about the more complicated knots even knotless knots widely used in carp fishing, and yes there is such a thing
