Clarity On Sgc

Recommended Posts

Hi looking on my police force site it says

"Do you have a good reason for requiring a shotgun?

If the Chief Constable is satisfied that you do not have a good reason for requiring a shotgun your application will be refused."

http://www.tayside.police.uk/Informa...otgun-Cert.htm

I was under the impression you do not need a specific reason as says here

"It is for the chief constable to demonstrate that the applicant has no good reason. In addition, the chief constable may not refuse a shotgun certificate application or renewal merely because he has reason to believe that the applicant has not used, or will not use, the shotgun or shotguns in question."
http://www.publications.parliament.u...ff/95/9505.htm

So i ask, do i or dont i need a specific reason

thanks

You need good reason, vermin control, clay shooting, rough shooting, game etc all good reason then if you are suitable regarding the rest of the criteria on the app then you should be ok,if for instance

someone applied and just wanted it to look at and didn't shoot it it would probably be no,but on the other hand I know of a lady who has a sgc because a perticular gun was left by her husband and it was a family gun pased down through the generations and when he passed away she wanted to keep up the tradition and was afforded a cert on that basis,

I do plan on using it for clays and real pigeons (once i get new land) so i dont expect any hurdles i was just a bit confused by the way the website worded it

just recently applied. and what cropped up was whether your a collector. if for FAC, you are granted certain amount per year of ammo, IF you shoot them from time to time, to keep things "working" . but with a shotty cert you dont need to apply for ammo. thats all you got to put on the cert is "getting into field sports" or along those lines if your not already. But most people are already doing something to require a shotgun. unless your a target tart who cant shoot rifles lol

Would like to know where Tayside police have got their information from.

You need no reason whatsoever to be granted a Shotgun certificate, the only proviso is that the police must be satisfied you are not a danger to yourself or others.

That is all. In fact, a shotgun certificate is a right to be granted. I could turn around to my FEO and say that I never intend to shoot my shotguns ever again and they will stay where they are for the next 50 years and so long as I don't become mentally deranged there is nothing he/she can do.

Obviously most of us will have a reason of some sort, but food for thought,
