Air Rifle Guidance Pls

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I'm after a little advise please,im not new to shooting guns etc but I only shoot rifles and shotgun, and kinda need to ask for help regarding a new airgun for my son,I have owned the odd airgun as a kid but they were back in the days when I had a new bsa meteor and progressed to a supersport,I sort of quickly skipped the whole air rifles and got pushed into live guns early and ive been rather ignorant towards air rifles ever since and lost touch with new stuff out there,he loves shooting and I think its time for him to own his own as he is very safety aware, still supervised by the way,its his birthday next month so I shall supprise him,I have a budget of around £120 and am asking for ideas on wat is good value,no to worry about scopes I have one on a rifle he can have,he goes on about the smk co2 bolt action type,he likes the idea of the bolt loading like my guns, are they any good, he will only be paper punching and plinking about the farms with me,not live quary just yet,I know its not a lot to throw at an air rifle but it will be knocked and bumped he's a typical youg un,all suggestions welcome, thanks in advance

I would go with a second hand gun for that price,, you will find you can get alot more for your money ,, smk guns are not the best but if its for plinking and cans etc then it should be ok ,,, if he likes the idea of a bolt i would try a crosman ratcatcher and they are light and great fun !! Or a break barrel like a bsa lightning , second hand of course :)

Sorry for the essay !! Haha

Just remember...in the eyes of the law he can't own a gun. He can use someone elses and when under their supervision ;+) I'd advise havin a read at all the new laws mate...just to keep on the right side of the law. Things have changed a lot in recent years :+)

The SMK 78/79 CO2 guns are ok. Not outstanding! They can be turned into reasonable guns by tuning, fitting new seals, polishing the internals to get rid of burs and fettling the trigger. They are accurate, better in .22 (.177 uses a lot more gas, consequently less shots per fill). But as a beginner, see if you like shooting weapn they are hard to beat, here is one I made earlier...

If you want him to learn to be a good shot id say get him a springer, its harder to master but once he does he will be a cracking shot for when he wants to have a go with your rifles
