RED DEER

The last 2 weeks, i have been surveying some deer damage ect, done by, what seems to be, a well established herd of reds, not too far from me.

They seem to have moved down from Co. Donegal and have spread, unfortunately, damaging young forestry trees and silage crops, by lying down in medows ect.

I was nominated to cull said deer and another section 42 was taken out.

Got to the place in quetion yesterday morning at day break, with so much rain of late, the place was flooded bad :icon_eek: and i felt like i was stalking the swamps of some far off indian jungle

Most of the time, i was in to the tops of me wellies in water and it was a splashing noise, that brought me within shooting distance to a herd of red hinds. They were moving threw the flooded feild and the splashing could be herd a good way off, dead calm morning.

I selected an old beast, no fawn with her and she was lagging behind the others.

After lining her up, i sqeezed the triger of my CZ .223, sending a Sako 55gr SP bullet to her heart.

She moved 10 odd yds and droped stone dead.

I am amazed at this caliber, the bullet broke 2 ribs going in and was firmly inbeded, on the other side, of the front leg :o , a caliber NOT, to be under estimated. :good:

Pic below, i had some haul getting her out those swampy conditions i can tell you :moil:  , the weather was so humid aswell, TROPICAL.

All the best, :drink:

What is a Section 42 Frank ?

Does it make your .223 legal ??

Cheers foxy

Section 42 foxy, is a permit, that can only be taken out, if the deer are doing damage in the summer months, when they are not in season.

As for the .223, the minimum caliber over here is the .22-250, as the .223 fires the same bullets ect, i, instead of applying for a .22-250, wrote a comprehensive letter, to the wildlife dept, explaning, the differences ect and was lucky enough to get to use my .223.

I am trying, at present, to apply for a 6.5 x 55, but dont seem to be getting anywhere  , too much red tape ect, they want me to get rid of the .223, which i wont, as im too attach to it. :D

Thanks Martin, yes, i was knackerd :icon_eek::D .

I have been told to take out 6 red and 12 fallow, their on the increase over here and are spreading out all the time, whats needed is a proper deer management program, as more bucks are getting culled then does, too many trophy hunters out their
