At What Age

Recommended Posts

Whenever you think it's ready mate, but just remember you can ruin a dog to young but can't ruin a dog that's older. No harm In getting it out watching and getting used to the lamp and ground you'll be to running in the dark and get it used to seing it's quarry down the beem, but for a average age to start it working 12 months +

at what age do you start working a deerhound x greyhound x whippet x collie ?

Concentrate on the dogs education first, recall, retrieve stock breaking etc, then slowly build its fitness levels up,at 10 or 11 months id introduce it to a few easy bunnys. It will do the dog no harm to get out and about from an early age, exploring the surroundings and scents,as long as this is part of the education process and not an excuse to let the dog chase rabbits that are yet beyond its capability. When i feel a dogs ready ill then reinforce the education and wait another month to be sure.

as morten said , perfect advice. if you have another dog get them both out and slip the older dog on gear and let pup watch yes it will pull your arm off but will grow that gameness, when out in bushy land gorse bramble etc.... with a head of bunnys lget it off the lead and let it learn to use its nose, the later you leave it the worse the dog will be at hunting up. i have a pup at 9 month its a bullx hes been slipped less than i can count on one hand and missed one. they have all been easy runs. little and often. dont give your pup a grueler of a run till atleast 14month. just remember your pup is still a kid and needs time for joints muscles to grow strong. the odd slip will develop these strong but constant slips will nacker your dog. also make sure food is right that is very important in a young dog.
