In The Middle Of Attic Conversion

Recommended Posts

I had a tradesman in he put windows & floor in, and staircase.

I asked him, asked him again, and asked him once more, if it is safe for the purpose (regarding floor joists and load bearing etc) and he insists it is.

Hiwever once he got the stairs & windows in, he kinda fooked me about (beauty of having a mate do the work) so I started boarding it out myself.

Nearly finished, the 'beams' I defer to, arent really in the way. It would just be better to chop em out. I could easily cut flush to the floor, then flush to ceiling, and patch in.

Reading some replies, i'll just leave them there.

I assumed the shorter beam was attached from pearling to floor joist, to stop it saggung, then the larger beam, from floor to rafter, to stop spreading.

They doing no real harm, so theyll just stay...... NOW anyone near cumbria who can skim it for me :D

those 4x2 supports are nothing to do with the roof spreading theyre acting as props for your roof hence the need for rsj as those wooden perlins could sag. your rafters are nailed to your joists at the wall plates and perlins hopefully to stop them spreading. if your doing it on the quiet and not through building control them your stud walls can support them and stick ceiling joists just below the ridgeboard even if its only 1-2foot wide it all helps. but its important to double up your old ceiling joists which is acting as your new floor to take the weight better without sagging your bedroom ceilings below or ull end up with cracked ceilings
