the durham digger 127
Just been having a catch up with an old digging friend and remembering past digs and the dogs we dug to, and a particular dig in early january in 1994. I had to find the date in an old digging journal. The dog i had out that day was a strong red dog by the name of tex and we stayed local that day, about 5 mins walk from my house at the time. Anyway to cut a long story short we tried tex in a spot we knew held under a beech tree and sure enough he fired up... we got a mark at 6ft on the old grey knocker box so we set to and started to shift some muck. I remember how hard going it was with the beech roots and since that day i have always had an axe in my bag. We broke through and lifted tex and with torch in mouth i peered into the darkness and looking back at me was 5 sets of eyes, all in all 1 vixen and 4 dog foxes. What a result. Iv had a few multiple fox digs but they mostly pairs with an occassional 3 now and again. Because of the time of year id have an educated guess and say the dogs were trailing the vixen until she was ready for mateing. Id like to hear of your multiple fox digs please lads. Thanks.
