Geese shooting

I am just wondering if anyone knows the law on shooting canada geese with a small bore rifle?

If you have the condition on your FAC that covers you to shoot them along with the landowners permission then fire away.

 

They're in season at present so no issues there and strangely, you can use a lead bullet to shoot them, whereas with a shotgun, it would be non toxic stuff only.

If you are using a shotgun you cannot use lead even if they are in your back garden!

That's my thinking if you shoot them with a shotgun you can't use lead so what about rifle? Someone where I do some work is shooting them along a river front which has a foot path along it, a bit stupid if you ask me. Just interested to see if you could or not as its with lead and also the conditions on fac because does geese come under vermin now as they are on the gerenal licence?

You can use whatever bullet head you want on Wildfowl, be it lead, copper, brass or any hybrid of those. Doesn't matter where you're shooting them either, you could quite legally shoot Geese whilst in season on the foreshore with a lead bullet from a rifle if you so wish and have the appropriate permissions. Gotta love Firearms legislation.

 

Canada Geese specifically are on the General license but you have to satisfy the conditions of the general license to consider them "vermin" such as they are damaging crops or proving detrimental to livestock. Outside of the general license, then you would need either specifically "Geese" on your FAC or something which encompasses them all like mine which states for all my rifles, "Vermin and other medium-sized quarry". Quite what defines medium sized I don't know, but a Goose is a fair size in my mind.

Yeah exactly les, plus there's 4 gardners walking around, and a shop over the back of the estate, the guy said to me go in and do the work where the guy was shooting,I was like no thanks I will call back another time don't fancy walking around an estate when someone is shooting a rifle!

would not fancy useing bullet on water as they ricochet very badly on water and if there is a footpath double danger.les

I think that is a big generalisation. The OP said smallbore, he didn't say .22lr subs, and even then......

 

You wouldn't have to worry very often if you were shooting Canada Geese, because they are commonly shot on land, and if you hit the things on water, you would need to worry much less about the VERY SLIM chance of a Ricochet!
