Fish, by the written description I'd given, suggested they may be Red Admiral or Small Tortoiseshell. Well, Fishy Fella, ye were in the ball park, mate. Only it turns out ~ according to some more specialist sources who viewed the actual photographs ~ that they're the larvae of the Peacock Butterfly. Weird looking shit, no matter what they're due to become! Here they are, look: Peacock Catapillar Massed Ranks! Believe me; They were some sight to see!
