Poplar Hawk Moth

As I sit here see, moths are attracted to the light through my window. I spot them fluttering about out there and nip out with a coffee mug and scrap of perspex. I then catch them against the glass, with the mug. Slip the perspex under and fetch them in here for photographing. Then I let them go again and wait for the next customer.

Well, I was actually in the Chat when This b*stard came smashing and battering at the window! Few of the lads I remember being in there at the moment may well recall my excitement! (Excitement? I nearly shit myself and had a cardiac all at once! ) I thought it was Lon Cheny Jr. trying to get in here! If he'd got away, I'd have been devestated. As it was, I got him and shot him and have been so smug it's taken me a week to get over it enough to even mention it here!

Just Look at the size of this mofo! That mug's three inches across look and he couldn't spread his wings if he tried! :icon_eek:

Great thing is; I visit a moths forum and someone there showed one of these. That fired my imagination. Then, Dean o' was driving us somewhere and we passed a line of Poplar trees. As Dean started musing about matchsticks, all I could think of was Poplar Hawk Moths! Barely two weeks later and look what I got! :D

If ever I come up with, to me, the Ultimate Hawk, the Oleandor, that'll be it. Change of denims for sure!

Nice one DS: but isen't the ultimate the Deaths Head Hawk Moth? Saw one many moons ago when I was but a little kid: I could hear better then and it DID squeak like a mouse: I chased it with my little legs going hell for leather over 2 fields (I was about 10 years old if I remember rightly) as it zoomed ahead of me taking the p*ss, then I fell at a style and watched it vanish into the evening. That was in Cornwall: as I said: many years ago. Never seen one since.

:hmm: Myself, I think the Deaths Head is the Legendary Hawk Moth, SC. I've never in my life seen one for real ~ must have been a hell of an experiance for ye! ~ but, as ye say; Even kiddies know about them.

No. If ye'd asked me, only a few years ago, what the Ultimate moth was, I'd have stated Deaths Head Hawk. Because that was all I knew to say. Today? Ultimate Hawk, to me, is the Oleandor. I just love that colouration. Possibly the Ultimate Moth, across the board though could well be the Scarce Merveille du Jour! If I ever came up with one of those, I think I'd be crying as I shot it! That, for me, would be The lifetime experiance!

One of these days, hopefully not too long away now, I'm getting me a proper Robinson trap. OMG! That'll make me get out of bed in the mornings! :D
