Ideation 8,217
Why do folk always say beddy x whippet? Most of them have never worked them, but just repeat it, because that's whats always said is a good ferreting dog. It's that same old mantra, more than likely originating from a book I think the terrier cross have limitations when rabbiting also, and I have seen a few in the field. Personally I would not be to concerned with the breeding specifics as a priority and go for two dogs doing the business However a medium sized strong pastoral based lurcher would be more to my taste. Does kind of make me laugh when you talk about this mythical minshaw running style, 'lyk glue to stuff'. . . . isnt that what any decent runner is like when after a rabbit? And we've seen minshaws come in such a wide range of 'types' that it'd be difficult to identify a 'minshaw' running style. Anyhow, i agree, if i had to have one dog for ferreting, it'd be a lurcher with a good chunk of collie. 1 Quote Link to post
johnny boy68 11,726
Mine. Isn't everybodies best dog for the job the one they're running? I've seen all sorts over the years BUT the ones that stand out have been the collie types, seen a few beddy x's but they've not had the patience/steadiness of a collie x imo,. With any dog you're going to use for ferreting the time put into training is essential, a lot of standing around doing nothing is involved for the lurcher and some dogs just ain't got the patience or mental steadiness for ferreting. paulsmithy83 567
My beddy x will ferret but not for to long, if your bolting them to the dog he will Mark and wait for the run as long as it takes but soon see them nets it's almost like he says f**k it, he will wait all day at a dig for a fox tho Quote Link to post
