Bit of a forage for Edible Mushrooms (pic heavy)

Recommended Posts

A thread on here a week or so back asking about an edible mushroom had put the seed in my head about getting out and finding some. Its not something that I have done for years but something that I was brought up around so have a rough idea of the most common and nicest ones. My repetoir of what I know is edible and not edible is fairly limited so I tend to keep to what I know or at least research if I find something am not too sure of.

I had been waiting for a bit more rain and since this week we have had a few decent downpours i figured i would take the kids and dogs for a walk to see what we could find. The woods we went to I have been going into for mushrooms since I was about my kids age, they are deciduous and have a lot of birch in there so hold a fair amount of Cepe and Orange birch bolete (spelling) and other good ones that are also closely related and very edible.

I was fairly disappointed with what I found to be fair and concluded that i will have to wait another couple of weeks with a bit more rain before this place will be alive with them. Crap pics taken on phone of the walk.

A cave that obviously had to be checked for Gruffalos...

The scabby remains of what may have been considered edible. (funnily enough my mum and grandad would have taken this home and considered it OK lol

Just as I was about to give it up as a bad job, luck was in and found this and another block about 4lbs in total of 'Chicken of the woods' . This is not one I was too sure about so took it and did a good bit of research when I got back in to make 100% sure. Found loads of good recipes as well so bonus!

Hit gold there with that chicken of the wood! :good: Was reading somewhere the other day, think I read they can be stored in a few different ways like freezing, drying, etc..

Not sure about drying, but I normally manage to get some stored away in the freezer to last a bit. I am not sure about chicken of the woods mind as it wasnt one I would normally go for, a bit unusual for my limited knowledge but the other stuff like Cepe and boletus freeze quite well
