Bullcat 12
I set a fox snare the other day, the usual 9" off the ground and about 9" wide. I used a commercial snare (aircraft wire with a swivel at the end). I pegged the snare using strong fencing wire to a fence star post and banged the post into the ground at a depth of around 8 inches. When I checked the snare the following morning, the grass was flattened in a circle and there was splashes of blood everywhere. But there was no fox, no snare and no post. There was also no blood tracks either. Do you thing someone has robbed the snare and the fox or do you think that the fox worked the post out of the ground and took the whole lot with him? pegandgun 51
You have to be very carefull with pegs in this weather. With the ground being so hard pegs won't hold like they will in the wetter months.Ide put money on it that your peg has pulled out.Have a good look round the area incase your fox has caught up in some thicked or fence etc Quote Link to post
Guest Bigbob
Just wondering why there would be blood all around with a snare there should be no blood . maybe sombodies found it shot it and made off with your fox and snare . But as p+g says its very dry pegs pull out easy better using a drag Quote Link to post
Bullcat 12
The ground isnt that hard where I live, as it has rained on and off recently. I would have not thought that there would be any blood using a snare. The only thing I can think of here is that he must have caught himself on the post I used for a peg, that was sticking out of the ground by about 2-3 inches. It was splatters of blood where the fox was going round in circles. I dont think anyone shot him as surely there would have been a pool of blood as well as the splatters. But then again, there wasnt a trail of blood leaving the scene. That Durham Puma traveled a long way, seeing that I live in oz!!!! Mind you, there have been sightings of puma`s here too!!! pegandgun 51
If its not a peg pull then someones taken your catch!! Quote Link to post
Bullcat 12
You`re right pegandgun, someone has nicked my catch and the snare. I went to the same field this morning. Another catch, but no fox and no snare . This time the peg/post was banged into the ground so deep, it would have been impossible to remove with a post remover. So the thieving shits cut the wire that attached the snare to the post. It was a clean cut as if they used pliers. Looks like they drove up to the snare. Had a word with the owner of the land about it, and he doesnt know who would do such a thing. However, he has put a piece of wood with nails at the entrance of his field. Lets see who/what we catch tomorrow morning!!! Quote Link to post

Bullcat 12
Hey, guess what...? Drove past the field this morning and I see someone working on a broken down Land Rover!!!! Anyway, I carried onto the landowners house and told him about it. We quickly grabbed a few tools (to help him off course ) and went down to the field. He was still there. We confronted the guy that was working on his punctured tyres, and he wasnt very happy with us, threatening us with property damage to his vehicle!!! So I offered him my mobile to call the police, but obviously he was not interested after we threatened him with trespassing and theft. Anyway to cut a long story short, he returned the snares which were at his house along with $40 for the foxes. Apparently this guy only lived around the corner from the field and he must of either saw me setting the snares oneday or he must of seen the fox flapping around. Quote Link to post

Bullcat 12
There is nothing more I would have loved than to break this w****ers jaw. But the thing is, you need to play it smart too. If I had done that, I`m sure he would have got the police involved and that would be the end of my gun licence. But I know what yu`re saying....these kind of people and dog thieves are the lowest of the low. Quote Link to post
TOMO 24,880
Bullcat what was his reason for stealing the foxes and snares? Quote Link to post
Bullcat 12
Bullcat what was his reason for stealing the foxes and snares? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I didnt want to hear his reason. I just wanted what was mine. Taking a guess, I would think that his reason was to get a few quid for the pelt and the snares would bring him more pelts in the future. Quote Link to post
