A november morning in 2003

Recommended Posts

It was late november and i had just gained some new permission i knew this particular bit of land held a good number of rabbits and there was a good number of foxes about but they werent my main quarry it was the roe deer i was mainly after i had walked the land a few times so i was familiar with the place so one morning the wind was blowing very strong so i decided that would be the morning i go after my intended quarry i got the dog loaded in the car by 4:30 it was nearly 6:30 by the time i got to my destination there was a few deer spotted around but werent on suitable running ground but i knew for a spot that always held 3 or 4 roe as i climb the 2 mile hill along side the woods there is a small paddock there was 2 muntjack but they will be left for another day im just getting to the top and the rain starts to fall lightly with a nice bit of wind perfect running conditions we get to the top and there are 3 roe in the field 2 on the edge of the wood and one in the middle of the field dog spots the quarry and starts putting some strain on the lead and the 2 on the edge had now vanished into the wood theres a big oak tree about quarter of the way into the field so both man and dog slowly creep to the tree without being spotted by the quarry about 100 yards from the tree deer turns and we are spotted so dog slipped and course begings she was up behind it putting pressure on it in seconds this field was about 80 acres and perfectly flat deer turns dog makes first strike but missed nice long straight run now then another turn dog cuts it off and strikes again bang good firm throat hold deer is down over i go to dispatch it dog is looking very pleased with herself with her first deer. Deer gutted and hung up the tree so i could get back down the mountain to get the farmers quad to retreive my quarry quick cuppa and chat with the farmer then set off home with a very pleased dog and my dinner a very productive morning i will never forget my dogs first deer. Dog that pulled it was a saluki whippet.
