Ferret Litter tray

After reading another thread and peoples opinions about litter trays for ferrets, Ive come up with an idea that may or may not work? When Ive finished making it I'll put a picture up and test it out to see if its any good. I should have it ready by tomorrow.

I have never had any luck with litter trays,every ferret i have ever had have scratched out the litter & trashed the cage

Couldnt wait til tomorrow Here it is, just cheap, crap wood which is easily replaced (Easier than a hutch)covered with fablon which I know might not last either but it only took me half hour to make and it should wipe clean when I clean the hutch out. I plan to put it where the ferrets go to the toilet (Where the litter tray is at the moment) and just cover it with wood shavings so they shouldnt even know its there. Its just an experiment and I realise it might not work but its worth a try eh. I'll give it a couple of weeks and say how its going. By the way, its held together with 'No more nails' and that will be covered with fablon so it should be safe.

Good idea, i tried using a new litter tray today, but my jill just wrecked it and turned it upside down.

mine have got a washing up bowl off the market with the front cut down. works a treat, cheap as chips.

My ferrets wrecked their trays and crapped all around it lol! Very inventive tho!

One of my mates has a alimium littter tray that fits flush in the corner and dosent have a lip on it and he never seems to have any trouble with it.

Just built a cage ready for some ferrets and have glued lino to floor and 4" up the sides, done the seams with silicon.

My experience... ferret piddle disolves all sealants,soaks into wood,corrodes metal.

Tried washing up bowls with side cut off,they poop on the outside of it! ...I once made a tray from an old road sign,difficult to make leakproof with pop rivets alone on corners and I can't weld.

i've salvaged a steel drawer from an old filing cabinet at work and cut off one end....

best so far but they still love to poop in the opposite corner of the cage!

One thing I will say (previously pointed out by Ditch).

If you feed your ferrets plenty of fur,feathers and bones,the poop is almost pleasant to handle and easily scraped up with a paint scraper.

Feed them too much dried food and they drink loads of water and piddle a lot.Also their poop is sloppy and big!

They piddle far less with real meat i find.

I don't know about anyone else but I get a lot of pleasure from these experiments!

Me too Mooster. Its been in place for two days now and its very easy to wipe clean with antibacterial wipes. Mind you, I check it and wipe it in the morning then repeat the process at night. It only takes a few minutes and I do it whilst changing their water/ feeding them. Ive no idea how long it will last but if it makes my hutch last a bit longer then thats me happy
