lucythepatt 0
hello people, a stray patterdale ended up at my house about 2 years ago, she was roughley 1 year old, she was chipped n when the rspca rang the number of the owner n they denied having the dog, so me n my girlfriend took her in, a cracking little dog she is, this is the first dog ive owned n really need some help, when i first got her i used to let her off the lead all the time n thought she would follow me hahahah how wrong i was, as soon as she was let off she was away boom gone she couldnt hear a word i shouted, i thought this may of been down to her cuming as a stray and i sort of i do what i want attitude, but as ive read it seems it could be down to her pray drive, so the last few weeks ive walked her on her lead to certain places were she can be let off her n thought well go on girl do you want to do, shes ended up in tick bramble bushes digging holes goin down holes poping back up shakeing her self off looking at me as if to say yea im alright n flyin back in again, last night we were at some sand dunes n she flew down a hole n started popping up here there n everywere i dint realise there was that many f*****g holes haha. so the question is really what should i be doing to help her? could i put nets over these holes or im i getting the wrong end of the stick, im realy keen to see the what the dogs capable of n what it was bred to do, i feel llike i could be starting to let the side down as i dont know what shes trying to tell me, plus what are patterdales main quarry rats, mice fox rabbits badgers?? thanks for reading any advice is fully appreciated Quote Link to post
MAIN MAN 277
You will loose her!! if i was you i would keep her on a flexy lead as you wont stop her going to ground" she will drop in somewhere and you wont have a clue where she is. this terrier is bred for work buy the sounds of her!! I have seen lots of people who end up with terriers and in time they just cant handle them because of the type of work they need, they just become a liabilaty. At this minit i have someone asking me what they should do with a terrier they found! its already killed geese chickens and a cat, its started to lock on to there springer and other dog.. Its bord stiff and will only get worse, Fair play to them for taking the dog in but there is only one place for them and thats a working home. Got given one last year that bit a chap and his mrs and was heading for the vet" i had her and after a few weeks she was sat on my youngest daughters lap and was and still is a great little terrier, she kills rats and has had plenty of out and has calmed down now and its nice to see her happy.. Good luck with her mate. 3 Quote Link to post
BS40liam 203
IMO if you don't no much about what your dog is doing, you shouldn't let it go down just any holes as if you havnt got a clue an your dog goes down a badger set then your likely to get yourself into a lot of trouble and as quarry goes.... Most of the above but defiantly not badger as ts illegal! Looks like you got a lot of reading to do! Not having a dig at you or pet but just some advise 1 Quote Link to post
lucythepatt 0
hahaha so these stray patterdales are quite commom ,points taken lads, do any of u recommend any books that will help get me started Quote Link to post
10inchsixnhalfkgsolja 31
Put a pic of it up lucy, u shuld buy a locator collar and box this will tell you exactly were your dog is underground if ur dog bumps in to a fox u chuld be ther a while so the box is needed to retrive your dog u will need a spade and a meatal spike about 5 foot u can stick this in the ground and put your ear to it and hear if your dog is barking (baying) at a fox or what ever you are hunting ,,, the aim of the game is for your dog to go to ground and find the game then it shuld work the game in to a stop end or make the game bolt depending on what you want or not let the quarry pass it and .keep it there untill you dig down using the box to locate the depth and positition of the dog then you lift your dog and dispatch or let run the quarry ,, but be warned its not as simple as go to the woods and do it read the rules and laws at the top of the page , or u will end up with your dog taken from u and being banned from owning dogs for years if not life so make sure u read it good luck and am sure any questions u have will be answerd on here there really paitent with begginers 1 Quote Link to post

billybear 32
As above. The dog was bred I am guessing for a job and the dog in my eyes knows more than the owner and that is never a good thing to someone who is starting out. Everyone needs to start somewhere but the dog you have is for someone with a few good years under the belt I suggest a flexi lead and keep an eye on the dog as when it gets bored of not doing the job it needs to do it may take a turn for the worst. It sounds to me that you are keen to learn maybe get a mate who is into this to show you the ropes and good luck with that as there are many people who keep them self to them self in this game. I wish you all the luck in the world. But try and find a working terrier club and get along there and try to learn from someone who knows there stuff. BB 1 Quote Link to post
billybear 32
It may be a start to try and determin what is at home in these holes ie rabbit fox or badger as you may do well to avoide the latter 2 keep an eye on what dropping are around the holes is usually a good start but not always as animals do use each others holes from time to time. It's very hard to start off in this game sure more posts will follow but it will be a lot to take in all the best BB 1 Quote Link to post

shaunpauls7 131
Stay clear of badgers bud... It is an offence to disturb a active sett. But as said above keep her on a lead as by the sound of things she is keen as mustard and with no collar? It's a disaster waiting to happen. And by collar I mean a locator.. All the best.......... Tallyho 181
Keep the dog on a lead cause you dont know what your doing, just say you do get her a locator she goes to ground you have to dig her out, then what ? what if she locked on would you know how to deal with it all ? You really need to be with somone that knows the score , or pass the dog on to a working home . Quote Link to post
