bucknut 1
Any one know anything about Shnauser Terriers for Hunting? A friend of a friends friend if you know what i mean - has one and he says its great on the rats and very gamie (think hes a bit of a tossa coz he has a story for everything). Anyway. they look great little characters and i fancy crossing my leggy border with one (she is a hyper terrier). The question is are they just show dogs or what? Cheers Buck Quote Link to post
Guest WILF
And the theory behind this mating is?........ Quote Link to post
Stabs 3
Bucknut...schnauzers are not terriers Quote Link to post

Simoman 110
Mating a schnauzer to a border would be a total waste of time.................... Quote Link to post
mussells 0
my friend has one called jimmy he looks qute and makes her lots of money in stud fee,s but thats it....in my opinion they are great pets but not workers.... Quote Link to post
Simoman 110
A couple of weeks ago I saw a Schnauzer that actually *wanted* to g-t-g! I've been judging AKC edog for...14 years? ...& he was the first w/an iota of interest. He was so frantic that he couldn't focus enough to FIND & ENTER but he *wanted* to.There's gotta be some, somewhere, that are worth spit but.....how many "pet-people" ever encourage them? And....,people will tell you that Norwich won't hunt/work & they DO! Theres a big diiference in earthdog trials and a dog going to ground in a deep earth full of pitfalls, not knowing what he may face, squeezing through tight tubes trying to corner the quarry and expected to work his quarry for an unknown period of time until he is dug to and then expected to hold the animal at bay until his job is done. BIG difference to entering a 30 ft wooden box and baying a rat.............Its hard enough to get a worker from the few true working breeds so why go for something like a schnauzer Quote Link to post
Simoman 110
Of COURSE there IS!!! As I said...the first one I'd seen that was interested in doing ANYTHING! The other one entered that wk-end just stood there & looked at me.At least the first one TRIED. Nope,I wouldn't even concider one. You could have taken both dogs and made something usefull out of them...............gloves Quote Link to post
CumbrianJack 2
I have mini schanuzers & although they are actually quite prey driven there is no way they can go to ground, they have anywhere from 19-25" chests on them . Mine have been brought up with terriers so do what the terriers do above ground but no way can they get down to charlie Mine are from show lines but haven't been shown, they hate showing & i hate all the trimming & puffing of the coats!LOL They are by far though on the whole just pets & i think mine are exception to the rule because they think they are russells. steezy 1
A Schnauzer is not a Terrier ! It´s a dogbreed bred only as watchdog´s ( the bigger ones ) ! They are bred in 3 different sizes Big , Middle and minni ! The 2 smaller bred type´s are only bred as companydog´s ! Maybe the would kill rat´s when they can get them but the are far , far away from workers for the right quarry ! Greeting´s Steezy Quote Link to post
lampinglurcher 36
Maybe the would kill rat´s maybe, but thats nothing to base a working terrier breeding program on ~ my gundog catches and kills rats, so does my boxer show one a fox and i reckon it would piss itself! the few ive encountered have been curs, running up to my dogs and quaking if they growl. DEFINATELY not worthy of putting over a decent working bitch. Quote Link to post
