spade 224
You mentioned Rutland Water. If you're near there have you been to the outdoor shop at Whitwell next to the climbing block. They have a reasonable bike department, check out what you like the look of then go and order cheaper on line.
moonlighter 1,165
I'm about 2 hours from rutland water, but I go a couple of times a year and hire a bike from that shop.
rocky1 942
Personally I would avoid halfords, for £500 I would look at getting a newish second hand bike off ebay or other trading site. Bikes lose their value very quickly, people can spend £3k on a custom balls out bike and sell it for a grand a year later it seems. This is what I have http://www.marin.co.....php?ModNo=12PT but the older model, Marin do great frames for the money and I haven't changed anything on mine and it has served me well (but any bike is still beyond my skill level, so that doesn't say much) have 2 disgree with their pal as the spec on that not much different then my carrera only thing is the rockshock forks 2 my sr ,imo that marin should be deore spec and not sram just my imo
