I put them in the middle mate. The tunnel can look like anything you want, I have some tunnels I made out of planks that are the exact dimensions for a trap to fit in set and fired that are about 18"-2ft in length which work well round sheds etc. In the woods etc you can use the same things but disguise them or make a tunnel out of logs or stones etc or just use a natural burrow but its more awkward. Some of the lads on here use wire tunnels on rat runs that i've seen.

I always set the trap flush with the soil level and sprinkle some fine soil over the top of it (while the safety is on) although I know you don't have to.

I push them into the tunnel as far as the chain will allow - this keeps them well within the law, and permits safe and successful operation of the trap. It also allows you to check for captures without lying down to peer through and getting your scent all over the site. I also, rightly or wrongly, have always set them at earth level and thrown a handful of leaf mold or light soil over the plate - taking care not to overdo it and affect the operation of the mechanism. I also set them as fine as I dare as those little bitch weasels weigh next to nothing!

Most of our fenns ccount for grey squiirels so we put them in there place, for example a gateway or favorite tree. Bait them up with nuts and all that then disguise the tunnles with sticks, stones, mud etc Or find a natural cover. Always always put the trap in the middle and two sicks on th entances to the trap so that non target species such as domestic cats and small dogs can not get into them.
