OldTrapCollector 377
I took my lad out for a short walk to look for a few bird's nests yesterday and found a few. I found a nice wren's nest tucked into an old stone wall made ornately with bracken fronds and lined with feathers, a song thrush in the garden hedge with 5 eggs, a hedge sparrow with about 5 hungry newly hatched chicks and these - Long tailed tits nest in a small feral bush - the entrance was on the other site but I didn't want to disturb the site too much to take the pic And this pied wagtail's clutch under a box bush on top of the farm wall. They nested in a similar site last year. It was nice to pass on the interest and enjoyment of 'nesting' to my lad without (as I felt compelled to do as a youngster) taking an egg for my collection. What other nests have you all snapped this year so far?? OTC
Guest Ditch_Shitter
Oh, OTC; You Complete B*stard! Fancy going and finding that Pied Wag's nest! I spent all last summer trying to quietly suss out where in the tangled and growing junk heap of my 'Ruin' My pair had their nest hidden. I was always sure it was in the old cabinet, but I couldn't reach it without involving danger to myself and any potential nest. This year, I'm gutted to have to report, Small Dog did get in there and discover this years nest I pulled one, nearly fully fledged chick out of her throat - to no avail, obviously. Next day I found her mouthing anbother one. Now the adults appear content just to forage for themselves Saying that, in my desperate efforts to find the nest and try to figure out a way of protecting it, if possible, I did find two of their earlier nests ..... in the old cabinet. I'm crazy for Pied Wagtails. They're known as the 'Gypsy Bird'. Old saying goes, " Find the Pied Wagtail; Look for the Gypsys ", or visa verca. I can never remember which. But it stems from the association of this bird with the sort of places Travellers would camp. Anyway, I have my own resident pair here and, as I say, have been after getting a shot of their eggs since I arrived. Maybe they'll nest again this year? Early days yet. Determined JR's not withstanding ..... I intend to clear that ruin out, probably next summer. With that in mind - and Small Dog - I intend to make and site them a few nest boxes. Put them up somewhere safe but accessable to me and my little camera. Ye bugger! Beating me to it like that. Rotten sod! Anyway, for the record; I now have the Swallows in my 'stock shed. Today I watched Great Tit's popping in and out of their nest (hole) in the Cow Shed - funny; Blue Tits used that one last year. I also reckon I have more Great Tits in a hollow stump, up along my ditch. Just haven't the time to go looking at it. Same goes for the Chaffinches in the hedge along there. The Willow Warbler I haven't been in place to notice this year. The Spotted Flycatchers aren't due in yet. The Goldfinches are back, but ditto for the Warbler. Busy boy! Oh, I have a Starling nesting round the back of the cottage. No bother to me because it's just above my Pest Control Storage room. Oh, and the Hooded Crows are still at it out in that Sitka Spruce. Seems " AK47 " only managed to blow a couple of primary's out. Get my own rifle here and I'll blow both their f*cking brains out! Funny; When I was a nipper, obviously, I did the egg collecting thing. Even then I wished I could get a camera and just photograph the clutches. Impossible dream then, of course. Now? Now we're all bang at it! Now that's what I call Progress!

OldTrapCollector 377
A Mistle thrush nest and a Musket admiring his nest building... Mist net, Did you get the customary dive bombing attacks from the mistle thrushes whilst taking that pic? They are some persistent and protective birds. I have not seen a Mistle clutch for few years - that pic brought back a few memories. I used to find them in an avenue of pollarded lime trees on my way to school . . .
