ferreting lad 2
spoke to the local gun dealer, he said the smallest caliber for fox was .222 and also for deer, he was saying that the ammo for the .223 is cheaper and was saying it will give you a little bit more distance ect.. i was wondering for my application, do i put deer and fox as i would be able to shoot both on the land? and also, wat do i do about moderators for the rifle? do i put this in 'type'?thanks.. dedger 16
You would only be able to shoot Muntjac and chinese water deer with a .222 for all other deer you would need a calibre of no less than .240 with a minimum muzzle velocity of 1700fps and a bullet weight of 50 grains minimum. as regards to ammo it would depend on what county you are in and your FAO, mine is 250 to buy and 300 to own. ferreting lad 2
yeah so would you put for example... .22lr rifle vermin control and lnd where you will use it and below it put.. 22lr moderator health and safety and the land where you will use it? well he said the minimum caliber for roe in scotland is a .222.. yeah but any ideas to how many 22 rounds and 223 rounds you could hold in the safe in the cabinet? so i get a rough idea how many to put down as its my only storage Quote Link to post
paulus 26
if your serious about the deer bit go for the 243 more round choice and a better calibre for deer and good on fox. Quote Link to post
dogsbollocks58 36
yes to right on that paulus Quote Link to post
TWOTWOTHREE 152
Hi On all my variations I just put for example, 223 cf reason vermin/fox control, and underneath 223 moderator, reason vermin / control did the same for all my rifles and it's been fine,as health and safety would be too I imagine, regarding ammo it depends what the feo let's you keep, Mine is 22lr but 500 hold 600, 17hmr buy 400 hold 500, 223 cf buy 100 hold 200 rounds, that's been ample for me always and never ran out, You will have plenty of the 22's if u request something like buy 800 hold 1000 it depends how much your going to be using then,at the end of the day your feo will tell you what your allowed and if it's not enough they do up the quantity if u ask, my mate has buy 1000 hold 1200 but he is a serious bunny basher, Atb 223 Quote Link to post
ferreting lad 2
yeah but i will only have the safe inside the 4/5 gun cabinet to store ammo so i want to know rougly how many i could fit 22 and 223 so i can ask for the amount, there no point asking for 1000 if they wont fit if you get my meanin.. it would be the occasional deer, mostly fox thats why i would apply for a 223... once i get money i could think about installling an ammo safe if i realise there isnt enough ammo Quote Link to post
worthy130 21
how long is a piece of string? we can not tell you how many will fit in your ammo safe inside your cabinate (presuming you do have a separate compartment for bolt and ammo) without seeing it. ATB Quote Link to post
ferreting lad 2
yeah its a seperate compartment.. im just asking to see if anyone has a similar cabinet and how many rounds the can fit roughly, or could i apply to have say 500 and buy 200 at a time, but not neccessary have 500 if i can only fit 200? ferreting lad 2
yeah iv done a bit of reading and in scotland a minimum caliber of 222 and 50 grain bullets can be used on roe deer... 'The bullet must weigh at least 50 grains AND have a minimum muzzle velocity of 2,450 feet per second AND a minimum muzzle energy of 1,000 foot pounds. ' Quote Link to post

ferreting lad 2
thanks.. if at one point i invest in a seperate ammo box, does the firearms officer need to come back out and check it? Quote Link to post
dicehorn 38
If your gun cabinet does not have a separate lockable compartment, then you will have to purchase another lockable safe to store your bolt and ammo. Regarding ammo what to buy and what to hold - you can apply for as much as you want, but it will be your local Police area that will have the final say on what THEY will let you keep. (in my area, first timers usually only get hold 200 buy 100) Now, just my opinion........... the .222 only just meets the energy limit for roe in scotland. If you are restricted to a 22 centre fire then I would consider a 223 with a fast twist rate that will stabalize the heavier bullets and will always remain well on the right side of 1000 ft lbs - why not even a 22.250 that with 55gr heads will push out near the 1700 ft lbs mark.
