lurcher retraining

Recommended Posts

Anybody any tips on getting a bull/hound back fit again.

We,ve just got her and she,s been worked before, she,s 6 years old and needs to get back in shape because she has been layed up for a year or more but not because of injury.

Will giving her a few runs on rabbits do the trick or does she need some roadwork too, if so how many miles per day and how many weeks before she,s back to her best.

alrite mate i'd say about 3 miles a day road work, for about a month. Then every weekend take her out on lamp just to bring her back up match fit.

how comes your starting a veteran and not bringing up some new blood. atb

thanks for advice the reason for starting the veteran is the bitch has done it before so i figure its easier for me to get her going first before i start a new dog i just have to get her fit instead of starting a pup from scratch plus shes the only lurcher i have at moment so if i get her right she might help bring a pup on in the future and show it how to run the beam etc.

I've just got one back to shape now I find the older the bull x the harder thay are to get back into shape and the longer it takes I've found build it up slowly behind a bike is usually a good way and lamping bunnys again building it up slowly hope this helps atb DONK

ok i may dust down the bike so she seems keen on the bunnys shes just lacking that 2nd gear at the moment

get her by the bike at a trot for a couple of miles twice a day, gradually build up the distance and speed till shes doing 4 miles twice a day at a canter if she retrieves then get her chasing a tennis ball for some speed work. she should take four to six weeks to get right depending what condition she is in when you star t. give her plenty of good quality animal protein and enough fat that she has energy to exercise but cut out carbs like biscuit
